UWF Drops Two Close Games in Doubleheader with Barry.

Argos lose game one 6-7, drop game two 5-6 in eight innings.

PENSACOLA, Fla. – UWF Softball (13-10, 2-4) dropped two close games to the visiting Barry Buccaneers (16-9, 6-3) in their midweek doubleheader in the UWF Softball Complex Wednesday.

Both games were decided by a run, with the final score in game one being 6-7 and game two's final being 5-6. Barry had to come from behind to win both as the Argos held multiple run leads in both games before giving up both leads in the seventh inning of both games. It is the Argos' fourth and fifth straight games to be decided by a single run.

Hannah Harper (6-5) and Montana Young (7-4) both held Barry in check for the early innings in games one and two respectively, with Young holding Barry scoreless through the first five innings with four strikeouts in game two. Late multiple run innings and missed opportunities would prove to be just enough for Barry to claim both results in the twin bill.

Despite losses, Argos continue to excel in extra base hits

Coming into tonight's doubleheader, the Argos were top five nationally in total home runs and total doubles as a team. Their slugging percentage was also top 10 in the nation. Tonight's games against Barry continued their statistical excellence in those areas despite the losses.

Madelyn Vasquez, Erin Moon, and Emma Brice added home runs, with Brice now accounting for eight total this season. The Argos' 37 home runs places them in the top three in DII softball as of Wednesday night.

Jessie Baughan, Gianna Guerriero, and Hannah Harper all doubled once tonight, with Guerriero also adding a triple in game one. The team now has 48 doubles total, keeping them in the top five in the country.

Game 1: UWF 6, Barry 7

Barry took an early lead in the first inning off a sacrifice fly-out. The 1-0 score only lasted a half inning as Madelyn Vasquez belted her fifth homer of the year to right center, scoring Erin Moon

Barry responded in the third with a 2-RBI home run of their own, taking the 3-2 lead. Once again, UWF took the lead right back with a Jessie Baughan RBI single, scoring Bella Holliday. Baughan advanced to second on an error and was brought in on Guerriero's 2-RBI triple along with Jessica Ford

With the score 5-3 in the top of the fifth inning, Barry chipped away at the lead on an RBI single, 5-4. UWF held Barry without a run in the sixth and needed three more outs to close the game with a win. The Buccaneers' small ball advanced multiple runners and tied the game on an RBI single. Barry took the lead on a sacrifice-fly RBI and padded it with another RBI single to make it 6-7.

UWF went up to bat in the bottom of the seventh and Erin Moon did her part, crushing her second home run of the season to bring UWF within a run at 6-7. Hannah Harper got on base on a single as the tying run, but a fly out ended the game and gave the Argos the close loss.

Game 2: UWF 5, Barry 6

In game two, UWF dominated the first five innings of the game. Emma Brice homered to right field to open up the scoreboard in the first. In the second, Baughan's RBI groundout scored Harper and pushed the lead to 2-0. In the fourth, Harper scored Vasquez on an RBI double, slowly bringing the lead up to 3-0.

Montana Young held the Buccaneers scoreless until the sixth inning and contributed to nine Barry runners being stranded during the game. The game began to flip in the sixth, when Barry finally got onto the scoreboard with a 2-RBI home run. UWF failed to respond in the bottom of the sixth as they got caught on a double play.

UWF once again needed three outs to earn the 3-2 win but couldn't hold off the Bucs long enough as they just managed to tie it at 3-3 with a fielder's choice RBI. UWF bats fell silent in the bottom of the seventh, and the game went to extras.

Barry wasted no time taking the lead in extra innings, capitalizing on a 3-RBI home run to right-center. With the game now 6-3, UWF didn't back down. Brice started as base runner on second base due to the international tie breaker rules. Vasquez drove her in on a right-side RBI-single. Baughan also drove in Vasquez on an RBI-single, bringing the game to 5-6. Pinch runner Brianna Jennings was sent from second to third on the play, and was called out for the final out, finalizing the 5-6 heartbreaker for the Argos.
