CLINTON, Miss. --- The University of West Florida baseball team split today's conference double header with Mississippi College on the road. No. 8 Argos (13-6, 6-2 GSC) fell 4-3 in the series opener but rallied back to take game two in a 3-1 victory.
Â
The Argos were at a 3-1 lead heading into the bottom half of the ninth. The Choctaws (11-7, 4-4 GSC) put up three runs and won on a walk-off. Mississippi College led off the final inning with two walks and a bunt to quickly loaded the bases. The Choctaws hit a sacrifice fly that sent in their second run of the game. MC maintained to load the bases again and tied the game on a hit by pitch. The team followed with a walk-off sacrifice fly to comeback and take the win.
Â
No team had a lead for longer than half an inning. Each team put up matching runs in the third and ninth inning to keep the game neck-and-neck.
Â
The Argos first run was brought in by a sacrifice fly in the third frame.
Trent Jeffcoat was awarded the RBI that brought in
Dean Hotz who reached base on a fielder's choice. The run was not easy as Hotz had to put on the gas and just barely beat the throw at home. Mississippi College tied the game in their offensive half.
Â
The Argos saw a two-run gap thanks to yet again, Jeffcoat.
Brett Rowell and Hotz were placed on second and first. Jeffcoat hit a two-RBI double that brought in both runners. Again, Hotz showed his speed and slid into home just before the catcher could tag him.
Â
Earning a no decision was starting pitcher
Dalton Neuschwander. He threw eight innings and allowed one run on four hits.
Â
Game two continued to be a battle but UWF came out on top.
Â
Jeffcoat led off the game with a bunt and was brought home with an outfield single by
Tyler Dowdy. The lead was extended by a run in the fourth with a Hotz RBI on a fielder's choice. Jeffcoat led with three RBI in game one and led with a pair of hits in game two.
Â
The Choctaws answered with an RBI single in the fourth to close the Argos gap by one run.
Â
Darrien McDowell hit an insurance solo home run in the seventh inning to give UWF an edge. He now has seven homeruns on the season.
Â
Kade Manderscheid had an outstanding performance on the mound and remains undefeated at 4-0. He threw his first complete game of seven innings and recorded eight strikeouts.
Â
The Argos will look for the series win tomorrow, March 10 at 1:00 p.m.
