Argos Split Twinbill with #13 Lee, Drop Series 2-1 to Conclude Regular Season

PENSACOLA, Fla. --- The University of West Florida baseball team split Saturday's twinbill, resulting in a 2-1 series loss to #13 Lee at Jim Spooner Field. The Flames captured a GSC Regular Season title.
 
UWF heads into postseason play with a 26-20, 16-13 GSC record.
 
The Argos tallied 11 hits between the games. Trent Jeffcoat was the lone player to grab a hit in each game. Four Argonauts led the day with two hits apiece.
 
GAME 1
The Flames were kept scoreless while the Argos put five runs on the board through seven innings. Dalton Neuschwander came alive on the mound and allowed no runs on five hits through a seven-frame outing. The second half of the Flames hits and two runs were scored in the final two innings.
 
Tyler Dowdy put the Argos ahead early in the first inning with an RBI single. He sent Darrien McDowell to score who reached base on a walk.
 
Zack Stokes brought the game to a 3-0 lead in the fourth frame. Jackson Grabsky led off the inning with a walk. He advanced to third after a single up the middle by Cade Easterbrook. Stokes, in his ninth start of the season, hit a two RBI double to give some leverage for UWF.
 
The Argos scored a pair of unearned runs in the seventh inning to extend the lead while keeping the Flames shut out. The Flames opened the inning with a fielding error that allowed Jeffcoat to reach base. McDowell followed with a single. Jadon Fryman came up to the plate and put down a sacrifice bunt that put moved both runners into scoring position. Dowdy grabbed his second RBI of the game after hitting a sacrifice fly that allowed time for Jeffcoat to advance home on the throw. McDowell scored the fifth run of the game after the Flames recorded their second error of the inning.
 
The Flames hit a two-run homer that shortened the Argos lead by three. UWF ended the game on a double play to take the win 5-2.
 
Neuschwander improved to 5-4 on the season. Lee's starting pitcher Keegan Gagliardo got his first mound loss (8-1).
 
GAME 2
A combined seven hits occurred in the series finale - the Flames accounted for six.
 
Lee put up a pair of runs in the game. The first run came in the second inning. The Flames opened the frame with loaded the bases in three at bats. An RBI walk put the Flames on the board. Loaded bases on no outs was seen again for the team but the Argos defense stepped up. Easterbrook connected with the catcher to stop the run at home and grab the first out of the inning. UWF recorded a strikeout and foul out to get out of a major potential drought.
 
The Flames second and final run came in the last inning of the game. An RBI single solidified the win and series.
 
The Argos will head to Oxford, Alabama and begin postseason play. GSC Championships will begin Friday, May 3 at Choccolocco Park.
