PENSACOLA, Fla. – The bracket is set and the 3-seed West Florida Argonauts (35-14, 22-8) will take on the 6-seed Union Bulldogs (28-21, 14-16) in the first round of the Gulf South Conference Softball Tournament starting Wednesday in Oxford, AL.Â
Â
The Argos faced Union back on April 5-6 and swept the Bulldogs at home. UWF won the first game 8-5 and the second with a 16-0 run rule. Game three was a nail-biter victory for the Argos, as they needed a
Jessie Baughan walk-off home run in the ninth inning to get the win. Since then, Union has gone 6-4 through the rest of their regular season and are 2-1 in GSC series.
Â
UWF is 48-33 all-time in the GSC Tournament but have struggled in recent seasons in Oxford. The Argos won their fourth conference championship in program history in 2019 under first-year coach
Ashliegh McLean but have gone 0-6 since then. The 2020 tournament was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Â
UWF is coming off of a 2-1 series win against Lee where they took game one 7-2, dropped game two 5-6, and dominated game three with an 11-0 run-rule on Senior Day. It is the seventh straight conference series win for UWF, and they enter the GSC Tournament on a 21-2 run since the beginning of March.

The senior right-hander now sits at 403 career strikeouts, 8

Â

Â
Scouting Union (28-21, 14-16):
Â
Senior utility infielder Macey Neal continues to be the leading producer for the Bulldogs. She leads the team with a .396 batting average, 45 runs, 65 hits, 12 doubles, and 11 home runs. Against the Argos, she was held to a combined 2-10 at the plate with no runs, hits, or RBI against
Montana Young and
Hannah Harper.Â
Â
Courtney Marler and Morgan Jennings have provided a large chunk of the run production for the Bulldogs this season as well, as both are in the top three behind Neal in runs and hits. Zoey Neal provides a power hitting threat, as the junior infielder provided a team second-best 11 doubles and 10 home runs this year.Â
Â
For the Bulldogs' bullpen, Lainey Baker (8-8) leads the Gulf South Conference in ERA with a 2.41. UWF had success against Baker in game one of their series in early April but struggled in game three during their eventual 2-1 extra innings win. Her 152 strikeouts are fourth in the conference.
