Argos Down Tars in Friday Night Showdown

Fontenot Leads With Two Goals

Box Score

PENSACOLA, Fla - Friday night lights called for a strong pre-conference match-up between the Argos and the Rollins College Tars. Often familiar with one another, the Argos held strong with one another and defeated the Tars 3-2 last night. The Argos now sit at 2-1-0 just before they begin their conference play against Mississippi College.

Game Notes

Scoring opened up in the 27th minute as newcomer Mar Aegisson recorded his second goal of the season for the Argonauts. The Iceland native found himself outside the 18-yard box with a few inches of space on the Rollins defense and struck the ball low and hard to the far right corner to convert the game's first goal. The momentum from Aegisson's goal continued as Sy Fontenot entered the match for the Argos. Coming off of a great 2023 season, the senior went back to doing what he does best: scoring goals. In the 38th minute, senior Jack Patching assisted Fontenot's goal as he flicked on a headed back right to the path of Fontenot to score the second goal of the night. The Tar's fought back and scored a goal just five minutes before the half ended to go into the second half at 2-2.

Hungry for more, the Argos came out strong in the second half looking for another goal to extend the lead. After a quick change in transition, the Argo defense cleared the ball, just to find a breaking space for Fontenot to get through. The senior took a few touches around the Rollins defense and finished the ball behind Rollins goalkeeper Jabari. Gray. The Tars converted a goal in the 60th minute, but the Argo defense held strong and the team worked together to defeat the Tars 3-2.

Additional Information

Nicolas Meckien recorded three saves on the evening, and both Keegan Lynch and Caue Novaes were the two Argos to record a 90-minute match on the evening. Freshman Flynn Halsor recorded more minutes on his freshman season, and newcomer sophomore Darius Talbert earned his first cap in the blue and white for the Argos. Coach Elliott rotated 19 players total for yesterday's match, and was able to see a lot of quality soccer from his team.

The Argos open up GSC play next Friday, September 20th at 5pm as they host Mississippi College. For more information visit goargos.com or follow on Instagram and X @uwfsoccer
