PENSACOLA, Fla. – A strong third quarter gave the University of West Florida women's basketball team a great opportunity to take down Alabama Huntsville, the No.2 team in the Gulf South Conference, but the Argos were unable to close things out in the fourth leading to a 69-65 loss at home.
Saturday's game was a battle between two of the top teams in the GSC. Both teams held a 9-2 conference record heading into the game. UWF looked to respond from the loss to UAH on the road earlier in the season.
The Argos had the highest scoring quarter of both teams in the third quarter with 24 points. After being down five points at the half UWF regained the lead and grew it to seven points in the third quarter.
With 3:07 left in the third UWF used a 9-0 run to take a 49-42 lead. UAH closed out the quarter with back-to-back buckets to close the gap to just four points.
A free throw by Lili Wilken of UAH with five minutes left in the game gave the visitors the lead for good. Wilken led the Chargers with 28 points.
After a two-minute scoreless stretch for UWF, the Argos still kept the game within reach.
Delaney Trushel hit back-to-back driving layups to cut the deficit to just one point with two minutes on the clock.
Trushel scored eight of her 15 points in the final three minutes of the game. The grad student also got fouled on a three-point attempt with 10 seconds left to keep it a one possession game, but the Argos didn't have enough time to complete the comeback.
Trushel led the scoring for UWF followed by
Rylie Stephens with 10 points as the only other player in double figures.
Alabama Huntsville took advantage on the glass, outscoring UWF 16-4 in second chance points. The Chargers had 41 rebounds, including 14 offensive boards.
West Florida (13-5, 9-3 GSC) will host West Alabama on Monday at 4 p.m. as the makeup date for the game that was scheduled for last Thursday evening.
