Argos Stumble at Home to West Alabama

PENSACOLA, Fla. - A pair of extended scoring droughts hit the UWF men's basketball team at the worst possible time.

After twice halving 10-point deficits, the Argos went minutes without scoring each time down the stretch, resulting in a 68-59 loss Monday night against West Alabama at the UWF Field House.

The Argos led 28-25 at halftime, but once West Alabama took a lead less the four minutes into the second half, the Tigers never trailed again.

UWF (5-14 overall, 4-9 in GSC), shot just 39-percent in the game on 22-of-56 shooting. West Alabama (10-9, 6-7) had a 37-24 edge with points in the paint.

Both the men's and women's games Monday against West Alabama were rescheduled, after historic snowfall last week in Pensacola forced postponement of the Jan. 23 meeting.

Senior guard Shay Davis led UWF with 16 points and grad student Zondrick Garrett had 13 points and a team-high seven rebounds for the Argos.

Davis made his first three 3-point attempts to start the game as 25-17 lead with six minutes left in the first half. But the Tigers answered with an 8-3 run to trim the halftime deficit.

West Alabama's tandem of Marcellious Lockett, who scored a game-high 23 points, along with Thaddeus Williams who had 16 points and eight rebounds.

The Argos will finish a third consecutive home game on Saturday against Valdosta State (16-3), the second-place men's team in the GSC. Tipoff is at 4 p.m.
