MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The UWF men's basketball team took control in the final ten minutes of the second half to open the season with an 88-70 win over Tuskegee in the GSC/SSC South Region Conference Crossover on Friday evening.
The Argos were playing from behind for most of the second half after a holding a one-point lead at the halftime break, but a steal and score by
Tim Hall Jr midway through the second half tied the contest at 59-59 and gave UWF life. That bucket would send the Argos on a 19-3 run spanning four minutes of gametime to put UWF into a winning position with a double-digit lead.
West Florida had four players score double figures with
Anthony Igiede leading the team with 22 points on 8-of-14 shooting. Igiede drilled four 3-pointers and also came away with two steals on the defensive side of the ball.
Aric Demings added 17 points,
Elijah Wyche 15 points and
Julius Jay King came off the bench to drop in 16 points for the Argos.
The 18-point win is the largest margin of victory over a DII program in a win for the Argos since the opening season win over Clark Atlanta in 2022 when UWF won 98-67.
UWF turned their defense into offense to propel the team to a win. The Argos forced 19 turnovers with nine steals leading directly to 32 points scored off of turnovers. Tuskegee had just 11 points in the same category.
West Florida will be back on the court again on Saturday to take on Spring Hill in their second game of the GSC/SSC South Region Conference Crossover. Tip off is set for 4 p.m.
