LAKELAND, Fla. – Back-to-back solo homeruns sparked the University of West Florida baseball team in the fourth inning as the Argos went on to win 10-7 over Florida Southern on Saturday.
After a scoreless first three innings with just two hits, the Argos finally got things rolling when
Brett Rowell hit a solo homerun with two outs.
Brantley Willis followed up Rowell's homer with a solo shot of his own to give UWF a 2-0 lead.
"I thought the back-to-back homeruns were a big confidence boost that kind of loosened the belt on the press to get it done," said head coach
Mike Jeffcoat.
UWF extended the lead to 5-0 in the fifth inning when
Tanner Taylor scored off a Grant Nobles RBI single. Nobles and
Jadon Fryman then scored following an error at second base for the Moccasins.
The Argos put more of a distance between them and Florida Southern in the sixth inning when Fryman's double to left field brought three runners in to give UWF a commanding 8-1 lead.
The Moccasins fought their way back into the game in the seventh inning when the hosts scored five runs to make it 8-6.
Willis, who led the team with three hits on the day, doubled to bring in two more runs for the Argos in the ninth. The score gave UWF a 10-6 lead. Florida Southern scored one run in the bottom of the ninth to close the gap but closing pitcher
Colton Dorsey forced the Moccasins into an infield fly ball and a strikeout to secure the win for the Argos.
Jacob Heath picked up the win for West Florida with six innings pitched. The senior allowed just five hits and one run.
"He gave us exactly what we needed," said Jeffcoat. "It was a lock down six-inning start that gave our offense time to get going. It was senior leadership stepping up to get the series even."
UWF (1-1) will play its final game of the series with Florida Southern on Sunday at noon CT.
