GULF SHORES, Ala. – It was a pair of mixed results for the Argos Saturday in Gulf Shores, as UWF Softball (2-1) won its morning game over the Saint Leo Lions 2-1 but dropped an afternoon contest to the Nova Southeastern Sharks, 3-7.
Hannah Harper (1-0) and
Haley Guffey (1-0) contributed to an impressive defensive effort in a 2-1 win over Saint Leo. Harper pitched 4.2 innings and was relieved by Guffey, who earned her first save pitching 2.1 innings and holding the Sharks to a run. Guffey now leads UWF with 11 K's including six today. She has allowed three earned runs in 13 innings of play for a 1.58 ERA.
UWF received multiple clutch performances from many newcomers, including two huge RBI singles from freshman
Angelia Discenza and
Kyndal Cornelius to drive in runs against St. Leo. Discenza went 3-6 on the day with a run and the two RBI.
Freshman
Nevaeh Hayes also entered the starting lineup for the first time this season and contributed a RBI and a hit against Nova Southeastern.
UWF 2, Saint Leo 1 – Highlights
The first two innings were deadlocked at zero with only a single runner being left on base for both teams combined. UWF struck first with an

Innings 4-6 saw the Argos pitching and defense continue to tighten up at the right moments. In the fifth, the Lions threatened with runners on the corners but
Haley Guffey relieved
Hannah Harper and secured the final out to get the Argos out of a jam.
UWF couldn't manage any insurance runs in the top of the seventh, and the Lions managed to get to second on an error. A single down the left field line scored a run for Saint Leo, and a sac bunt advanced them to second. Guffey managed a strikeout, and the Argos defense claimed the final groundout against a Saint Leo pinch hitter to get a major victory in game 1 at Gulf Shores.
