PENSACOLA, Fla. – A foul call on a last second shot in regulation helped Mississippi College secure a 70-67 win over West Florida on Thursday night in the UWF Field House.
With 25 seconds remaining in the game,
Elijah Wyche knocked down a pair of clutch free throws for the Argos to tie the game at 67-67. On the ensuing offensive possession for the Choctaws the team ran the clock down for a final shot. MC's Ty Briscoe's shot was blocked by
Zondrick Garrett, his seventh of the night, and then corralled by Choctaw leading scorer, Rashad Bolden who quickly put up a shot before time expired. A foul was then called on
Ja'Ron Briggs Jr. sending the Bolden to the free throw line with one second remaining. Bolden hit all three shots.
The game featured 10 lead changes with nine of those lead changes coming in the final 12 minutes of the game.
UWF got off to a slow start in the game as they faced an early nine-point deficit, but the team used a 14-2 run to take the lead with 11 minutes left in the first half. The Argos largest lead of the game was eight points in the second half.
Garrett's impressive defensive performance with seven blocks put him one shy of the UWF all-time single game record which was set by Charles Bouie in 2008 and Kelly Powe in 2000. Garrett also had 11 points, 8 rebounds, 2 steals and an assist.
Xavier Glenn led the Argos on offense with 18 points.
West Florida (6-17, 5-12 GSC) will host Delta State on Saturday at 4 p.m.
