PENSACOLA, Fla. – A couple long innings for UWF Softball (6-6, 1-2) proved to be too much to overcome as the Argos dropped game three of a weekend series with the Montevallo Falcons (5-5, 2-1) by a score of 3-7.
The Argos committed four errors in the game, with two occurring in the first inning leading to a couple Montevallo runs. It is the first GSC series the Argos have dropped since March 9-10 of last season against Mississippi College.
UWF bats were stifled for most of the game, but two freshman contributors stepped up in big moments.
Nicole Mergen hit her second home run of the season on a solo shot to left center in the fourth inning.
Angelia Discenza also helped get the Argos on the board in the first inning with a triple and a run after an
Erin Moon sac-fly RBI.
Haley Guffey (3-3) pitched the majority of the game and took over for Mergen (0-1) after the second inning. Guffey held the Falcons to two runs earned in her five innings pitched with only a single walk and four strikeouts.
Cameron Wolfenden also added an RBI double on her senior day.
UWF 3, Montevallo 7
Haley Guffey started the game at the flex position and was replaced by
Nicole Mergen to start the game. A single and an error allowed two Falcons base runner to get on. A double on the next Montevallo at-bat combined with another fielding error provided two runs for Montevallo to start off.
Discenza hit her triple in the bottom of the first and was brought home by Moon. Montevallo recorded three hits including a 2-RBI double and got two others on from walks. Guffey came back in to replace Mergen and closed the frame with the Argos now down 1-5.
Emma Brice doubled and
Jessie Baughan was hit by a pitch to put two on for UWF. Wolfenden brought home Brice on the RBI double to bring UWF within three runs at 2-5.
Mergen's solo home run in the fourth closed the gap to 3-5, and Guffey continued to clear the Falcons in two more innings. UWF failed to get any closer in that time, opening the door for Montevallo to secure their lead. They managed to do so in the seventh off of a 2-RBI single. UWF went down in order in the bottom of the seventh to seal the loss, 3-7.
