INDIANAPOLIS - No. 7-seed UWF men's tennis (4-0, 1-0 GSC) capped off its fifth stay in the ITA DII National Men's Team Indoor Championship with a 3-0 record and a title for the first time in program history, sweeping 8-seed Washburn (5-1) 4-0. The bottom seeds pulled upsets from their spots in the bracket in the quarterfinals and semifinals to set up a matchup of unbeatens, and now the Argos have handed the Ichabods their first loss of the season. Since the tournament began in 2020, UWF has been in the field five times in those six seasons, and this is the first time
Derrick Racine's Argonauts have pulled off an undefeated record and left Indianapolis with a title, helping the program build momentum to aim for another conference and regional championship.
In kicking off the match,
Sebastian Rondon and
Diego Duran took out a weekend of frustrations at the top of the doubles lineup on Matthew Earle and Tim Hammes, easily winning 6-2. Shortly after,
Albin Ekenros and
Miguel Cabrera held off Vasek Schneider and Tommy Cecchetti 6-3 one court over to win the doubles point for the Argos for the first time on the weekend, which would assure this matchup would not require a comeback.
The first singles matchup to finish up was on court five, as Ekenros pulled away from Earle 6-3, 6-4. At the No. 2 matchup, Rondon overcame a flat second set against Schneider, ranked No. 15 in the ITA Preseason Singles Rankings, and built enough cushion in the odd sets to win 6-3, 0-6, 6-2 to place his team one win away from taking home the trophy. The winning point came one minute later on court three, as
Sebastian Sotelo, facing the No. 33 preseason singles player in Pavlos Parson, pulled away in the first set to win 6-4 and ran away with the matchup in the second with a 6-1 final to start the early celebration for the Argos.
UWF gets a few days to continue to celebrate, but heads to Memphis, Tenn., for its next three contests next weekend, as the Argos start on February 21 with a Friday morning nonconference match against Southern Arkansas before taking on Christian Brothers for their first GSC road tilt and wrapping up the day with another crucial neutral-site match versus Ouachita Baptist.
