MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Coming off its first ITA Men's Indoor Championship in program history and newly ranked No. 2 in the nation, UWF men's tennis (6-0, 2-0 GSC) built on its success with a Saturday sweep. The Argos defeated host Christian Brothers (3-1, 0-1 GSC) 7-0 for its second GSC win of the season, improving to 16-0 in the all-time series with the Bucs, before taking down Ouachita Baptist (3-2, 1-0 MIAA) 5-2 in a neutral-site contest for its 15th win in its 18th meeting with the Tigers.
UWF 7, CBU 0
Christian Brothers scored its lone win of the day at No. 2 doubles with a 6-3 win by Benjamin Hanriot and Pedro Gomez over
Denilso Martinez and
Alex Maulouet. It would not hold up for the final result, however.
Mateo Martinez and
William Meyering, in their first action of the season and the first of Meyering's career, flipped the script with a 6-3 decision against Ernesto Pico and Alexandre Randoux. At the top of the lineup,
Tomas Leston and
Sebastian Sotelo advanced to the tiebreaker before defeating Ignacio Mora and Juan Ycaza to claim the doubles point.
Albin Ekenros and
Mateo Martinez finished up their singles matches at almost the same time with 6-1, 6-1 victories over Mora and Pico, respectively. Maulouet, also seeing the first playing time of his Argonaut career, won 6-3, 7-5 at No. 3 over Hanriot to clinch the match with a 4-0 lead.
Denilso Martinez put up another identical final score one court down over Tristian Kelly. In the top matchup,
Diego Duran took down Ycaza 7-6, 6-3. Lastly, at the bottom of the lineup, Meyering and Pedro Gomez split the first two frames 6-3, 4-6 before Meyering finalized the sweep with a win via super tiebreaker.
UWF 5, OBU 2
In a match starting just three hours after the first began, the Argos faced a slighter tougher test but came out on top once again to increase their winning streak to six matches. On the first court of doubles play,
Sebastian Rondon and Duran won 6-3 over Phil Exner and Ramon Strassman. Ouachita Baptist tied up this portion of the contest with a 6-4 win one court down by Yarin Aebi and Aaron Osmond over
Miguel Cabrera and Ekenros. Sotelo and Leston then put their squad up 1-0 with a 7-5 victory over Moritz Buss and Tinus Mueller.
Leston went 2-0 as he finished off his singles match 6-3, 6-3 over Aebi, and
Mateo Martinez followed suit with a 6-3, 6-0 win at the bottom of the lineup over Mueller. Osmond got a point back for his team with a narrow 6-4, 7-6 (9-7) victory over
Denilso Martinez, and Exner won the No. 1 duel 6-4, 6-2 over Cabrera to get the Tigers within one at 3-2. However, the Sebastians would step up again for the Argos. Rondon pulled out the lone three-set result of the contest 6-1, 5-7, 6-3 over Strassman and Sotelo sealed the deal with a 6-3, 6-4 takedown of Buss.
UWF has one more match in Memphis as it takes on Southern Arkansas for a rescheduled top-25 matchup at 10 am tomorrow.
