PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Florida baseball team scored a combined 20 runs in the first two games of a three-game series with Christian Brothers. The Argos won the first game of Saturday's doubleheader 12-2 in a called seven inning run rule game and won the second game 8-0.
The Gulf South Conference series was originally supposed to be played on the road in Memphis, but projected poor weather caused the games to be moved to Pensacola. The Buccaneers remained the home team despite it being played at Jim Spooner Field.
GAME 1
The Argos had a slow start in the opener with Christian Brothers taking a 2-0 lead in the first inning. UWF managed just one hit through the first four innings, but the team got hot in the fifth inning scoring six runs on four hits.
Cade Easterbrook's RBI single to right field scored
Alex Urias to give the Argos their first run of the contest. Later in the inning Urias' sacrifice fly deep to center field brough Jaydon Fryman in to score to give UWF a 6-2 lead.
West Florida continued the dominance in the sixth inning with three more hits to score four more runs.
Brett Rowell crushed a three-run homer to put the Argos up 9-2. Later in the inning Urias hit a single to drive in another run for the Argos.
In the seventh, UWF grabbed a double-digit lead after Fryman doubled to bring in one run and then later
Tanner Taylor hit a SAC fly to right field to give the Argos a 12-2 lead.
Dalton Neuschwander earned his third win of the season after going six innings with 10 strikeouts and only allowing two hits.
GAME 2
In the second game of the day, the Argos only gave up one hit in the seven-inning game as UWF went on to win in shutout fashion, 8-0.
Colton Dorsey was credited with the win. The junior went just over four innings.
UWF scored runs in all but two innings. The team finished with 13 hits coming from nine different players contributing at least one hit in the game.
Urias and Rowell continued their strong day with each player getting two hits. Urias also had two RBIs to go along with his hitting performance.
"All conference wins are good," said head coach
Mike Jeffcoat. "To win two today was big. We had timely hitting, we took our walks, we didn't overswing today. Just a lot better improvement with our offense."
UWF (6-6, 3-2 GSC) will play the final game of the series with CBU on Sunday at 10 a.m. The original game time was scheduled for noon, but the teams will look to get the game in before potential bad weather starts in the afternoon.
