BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Gulf South Conference announced its weekly tennis awards today for performances in matches from February 17-23. UWF women's tennis came away with a clean sweep, as
Sandra Recuenco won her second GSC Player of the Week award of the season and her Argonaut career and
Alberte Joergensen took home her first weekly award for GSC Freshman of the Week.
Â
After winning her first GSC award three weeks ago for opening week, Recuenco has earned the honor again coming off a 3-1 individual weekend as she helped the Argos to a GSC win at Christian Brothers and a ranked win against No. 18 Southern Arkansas. Against CBU, the native of Valencia, Spain, came back from a 7-5 setback at No. 1 doubles to Sofia Zemtsova and Lucia Lucas, which was negated by Argo wins on courts two and three, to defeat Zemtsova 6-0, 6-4 to help seal things with a 5-0 UWF lead. The next day, she and teammate
Carlota Verdu defeated Amelie Gindl and Josie Holderbach 6-2 to give their team the early advantage in doubles before Recuenco defeated Holderbach 6-1, 6-1 to put her team ahead 2-0.
Â
Joergensen put up a 3-0 week to play her role as the youngest participant on the team on Saturday and Sunday. The native of Copenhagen, Denmark, won at doubles versus CBU with partner
Giuliana Sacco 6-1 to win the point for UWF. She then gave her team a 6-0 lead with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Raheen Taranum on court three. Against SAU on Sunday, she then sealed the upset win for the Argos as she gave them a 4-0 lead with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Camila Corrales at the bottom of the lineup.
Â
The Argos are back at it today with a GSC match at Delta State before traveling to play three matches in the GSC-Lonestar Crossover Tournament this weekend in Tyler, Texas.
