PENSACOLA, Fla. – UWF Softball (13-6, 6-2) secured its second-straight Gulf South Conference series win with a pair of wins against Delta State (8-5, 4-3) Friday afternoon.
West Florida held off a comeback attempt by the Lady Statesmen for a 7-5 win in game one before dominating at the plate in an 11-2 five inning run-rule for game two. UWF now owns the longest active win streak in the GSC at seven-straight wins. They have won six straight over Delta State and secured their tenth-straight series win over the Lady Statesmen.
Gianna Guerriero was once again the story of the day, as the senior from New Jersey recorded three triples to go along with two other hits, five runs, and a stolen base between the two games at the leadoff spot.
The Argos relied on extra base hits to churn offense again, producing 10 extra base hits between the two games. Their lineup produced five doubles, three triples, and two home runs by
Nicole Mergen and
Jessie Baughan.
Erin Moon also brough in a third of the Argo's 18 runs today in a six RBI performance.
Game 1: UWF 7, DSU 5
Haley Guffey (7-3) started in the circle and led the Argos to the win despite the comeback efforts from DSU. Guffey helped the Argos leave five on base in total and surrendered three earned runs with 3 K's.
UWF jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first three innings Thanks to Moon's first RBI sacrifice to score Guerriero. Discenza doubled and Brice brought her in with an RBI single. In the third, an error allowed Discenza to reach third and Guerriero to score. Moon again recorded a sacrifice flyout to score Discenza this time.
DSU struck back in the fourth and fifth with two runs on an single followed by an error and a 2-RBI home run respectively. With the score at 4-3, Moon UWF when back to work to solidfy their lead, starting with Guerriero scoring on an error in the fifth. In the sixth, Baughan doubled to score Brice and
Bella Holliday pinch hit to score Baughan.
In the seventh, a single and a couple errors allowed a score and another baserunner, but a pop up secured the 7-5 game one win.
Game 2: UWF 11, DSU 2
Hannah Harper (6-1) pitched for game two and earned her sixth win on the season as the Argos run-ruled DSU to secure the series win. DSU went up early in the first on a couple singles combined with a couple wild pitches and an error. UWF managed to get out of the inning only down two, but it proved to not be of consequence.
UWF bats put up two five run innings in the bottom of the third and fourth after a Guerriero score on an
Erin Moon RBI groundout started them off in the first. Moon also got a sac-bunt RBI in the third to score Guerriero again in the third. Harper scored Discenza on an RBI single, and an error scored
Brett Watson as a pinch runner. Mergen cleared the bases with her home run to end the third.
In the fourth, the Argos also put up five starting with a Moon RBI-double followed by a Harper RBI-double. Brice singled to right-field to score Harper, and Baughan brought in Brice on her 2-RBI home run. Harper and Co. cleared out the Lady Statesmen in the top of the fifth to trigger the 11-2 run-rule.
