BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Gulf South Conference announced its weekly tennis awards today for performances in matches from January 31-February 2. Upon playing her first match as an Argo,
Sandra Recuenco has been named GSC Women's Tennis Player of the Week.
Â
In her first counting match since transferring in from Middle Georgia, Recuenco provided a silver lining going forward for the Argos as the team suffered a 6-1 opening setback to Division I side South Alabama. On court one in doubles, she and partner
Carlota Verdu fought hard against the top Jaguar duo of Manal Ennaciri and Lara van der Merwe before falling 6-4, nearly pulling the doubles contest even as the No. 3 matchup went to a tiebreaker before USA pulled off a doubles sweep.
Â
In singles play, Recuenco then made her presence felt again, as she registered the lone point of the day for UWF on court two. She claimed the first set of her matchup against Ennaciri 6-3 and led 2-1 in the second before winning via opponent retirement.Â
Â
The Argos return home to open GSC play in a match against Montevallo on Saturday, Feb. 8 at 1 pm.Â
