NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Argos had a pair of chances to tie or win the game at the buzzer Thursday evening on the road against Trevecca Nazarene but was unable to capitalize dropping the Gulf South Conference game, 74-72.
Elijah Wyche quickly drove to the basket as time wound down and put up a game-tying shot that missed everything but found the hands of
Eli Brown on the offensive rebound. Brown then kicked it out to an open
Shay Davis who's 3-pointer barely missed, hitting the front rim as time expired.
It was the Argos fourth game of the season determined by three points or less and tenth game of the season that had a final score difference of five or less points.
The largest lead of Thursday's contest was just seven points by Trevecca in the first half while the majority of the game was played with a one possession scoreline. UWF grabbed the lead before halftime, 36-34. In total, the lead changed hands seven times, and the score was tied on 11 different occasions.
Leading up the game-winning attempt,
Shay Davis was fouled shooting a 3-pointer with nine seconds remaining in regulation. The senior drilled all three pressure-filled free throws to make it a 73-72 game. After fouling the Trojans, the team hit one-of-two free throws allowing the Argos the attempt to tie or win.
All three of the highest scoring players for West Florida came off the bench.
Xavier Glenn scored 20, Davis added 17 points and
Zondrick Garrett had 15 points.
UWF falls to 5-16 overall and 4-11 in the GSC. The Argos will play Lee University on Saturday at 4 p.m. CT.
