Argos Go 1 For 2 in First Day of Mizuno Invitational

#8 UNG comes back from behind to win 3-5, Argos respond with big win over Lake Erie College 10-5

DAHLONEGA, Ga. –  A pair of split results marked the Argos' performance during day 1 of the Mizuno Invitational.

The West Florida Argonauts (3-4) dropped another close game to #8 North Georgia before exploding offensively in a 10-5 win over Lake Erie College.

Echoes of the record-setting batting lineup of 2024 made themselves heard, as the Argos rode power hitting all the way to victory in game two of the day. Seven different Argos recorded extra base hits today, with 10 total extra base hits combined between the two games.

Gianna Guerriero had a very consistent day, producing a solid stat line in both games. The senior from New Jersey went a combined 6 for 9 with three runs, a double, a triple, and an RBI along with three stolen bases in the two games.

Jessie Baughan broke out of her quiet beginning to 2025 with an impressive performance against Lake Erie, going 2-4 at the plate and recording a run, a double, a home run, and an RBI.

Hannah Harper (2-0) earned the win against Lake Erie, allowing just two earned runs to improve her season ERA to 3.13. She also leads the team in batting average at .455 through seven games, going 4-7 with three runs, a home run, and an RBI Saturday.

West Florida 3, #8 UNG 5

Things started out exactly the way the Argos had hoped in the first inning. Haley Guffey got the start in the circle for the Argos.

Emma Brice continued her power hitting success so far this season, knocking a homer to center field to score Guerriero. Kyndal Cornelius singled to right field to score Harper. UWF was forced to leave three total runners on base, but left the first inning with a 3-0 lead.

The lead was short lived as the Nighthawks quickly got several runners aboard with a frenzy of singles in the second inning. UNG claimed the lead back 3-2. The Argos went down in order in the third and got the Nighthawks down to two outs before a UNG home run to left center put them ahead 3-5.

Guffey shut the Nighthawks down the rest of the game, but the UWF batting order failed to add any support runs despite getting runners on base in multiple innings. Harper got aboard in the seventh inning and UWF had the tying run at the plate, but a line out sealed the loss to UNG 3-5.

West Florida 10, Lake Erie 5

Once again, UWF came out swinging for the fences. Brice scored Guerriero for the second straight game, this time on a sacrifice flyout. Harper sailed her first home run of the season to center field to put UWF on top 2-0 after the first inning. Lake Erie responded with a couple runs due to an error and a couple singles.

It was the second inning that proved to be the deciding factor in the matchup. The Argos hit four straight extra base hits including two home runs and two triples and never looked back. Baughan started things off, followed by Alayna Lowery's first home run as an Argo. Guerriero added her triple followed by an Angelia Discenza triple to score Guerriero. Emma Brice singled scoring Discenza, and Brice was brought in by a Nicole Mergen sacrifice flyout. The order came all the way back to Baughan, who recorded her second extra base hit of the inning to score Harper and close out the inning with a 9-2 lead.

The storm struck back with a solo home run to center field to cut into the deficit 9-3. Harper continued dealing on the mound all the way to the seventh inning, where Kamila Vicente took over to relieve Harper. Discenza scored Bella Holliday on another sacrifice after her Holliday recorded her second double of the game.

Lake Erie made one final attempt with a couple hits in the seventh to score two more, but 10-5 was the final after seven in favor of UWF.
