PENSACOLA, Fla. – The UWF baseball team earned its second straight win in its midweek series with Georgia Southwestern on Wednesday afternoon, downing the Hurricanes 9-4.
A six-run fourth inning was the difference for the Argos. After Georgia Southwestern scored four runs in the top of the fourth to take a 4-1 lead the Argos answered with a busy bottom of the inning. The six runs were highlighted by a three-run homer by
Ben Maskin.
The scoring in the inning started when
Gann Nobles bunt scored
Jadon Fryman. A misplayed throw to first advanced Nobles to second base. Later in the inning
Brett Rowell hit a two RBI single to right field giving UWF a 7-4 advantage.
The Argos added two more insurance runs in the sixth inning when
Brantley Willis singled to left center field.
"A lot more offense today," said head coach
Mike Jeffcoat. "We did a little bit better job scoring some runs. We got some help from them with a few walks. Still looking to grind to get better."
The bullpen was busy for UWF with five different pitchers seeing action.
Garrett Brewer got the start on the mound giving up four hits but just two earned runs.
Blake Thomas came in relief for Brewer to strike out two and help shut down the fourth inning scoring for the Hurricanes. Thomas earned the win for the Argos and is now 2-0 this season.
"I'm so proud of the pitching this week," Jeffcoat said. "You're always going to go deep in your pen when you're in the midweeks and our pitching picked us up this week."
UWF is now 17-9 this season and will head to Union for a weekend series starting on Friday at 6 p.m. Saturday's doubleheader begins at 1 p.m.
