Match Recap: Men's Tennis | | Joel Sellers

Men’s Tennis Remains Undefeated with 4-0 Week

Argos Score Third GSC Win and Sweep GSC-Lonestar Crossover Tournament

TYLER, Texas - No. 2 West Florida men's tennis (11-0, 3-0 GSC) put together another successful week at the office, going 4-0 with its third conference win of the season and a perfect three-match sweep of its Lone Star Conference competition in the second annual GSC-Lonestar Crossover Tournament, including a pair of Top 25 wins.

No. 2 UWF 4, Delta State 0
UWF dispatched the Statesmen (1-4) with ease in Cleveland, Miss., for the Argos' third conference win, all via sweep, as well as their fourth total sweep this season. Diego Duran and Sebastian Rondon won 6-3 at the top of the lineup before Miguel Cabrera and Albin Ekenros put their team up 1-0 with a 7-5 win one court down. Cabrera and Duran proceeded to clinch undefeated days as they won 6-1, 2-0 and 6-4, 6-1 on courts one and three, respectively. Sebastian Sotelo finished the day early for UWF as he claimed a pair of 6-1 frames on court two. With that, the team headed west for the weekend.

No. 2 UWF 5, No. 16 UT Tyler 2
Starting the weekend off with the host Patriots (3-1) and the fifth ranked opponent so far in 2025, the Argos fell behind early with 6-3 and 6-1 setbacks at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, though Tomas Leston and Sotelo won 6-2 at the bottom of the lineup. Each of the three Argos playing in singles who dropped doubles matchups would have their revenge. Cabrera won at the top of the lineup 6-4, 6-0, Ekenros won on court five 6-0, 6-2, Rondon took the No. 2 matchup 6-3, 6-0 and Duran claimed the first three-set matchup 6-4, 2-6, 6-3. Artiom Dorofeev of UT Tyler claimed the No. 3 matchup over Sotelo 6-2, 6-4, but Leston scored the final point of the day at No. 6 singles 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-6). The result avenged UWF's loss to the Patriots to open last season's tournament, which dropped the Argos to 2-4 but proved to be their last loss until the postseason.

No. 2 UWF 6, No. 19 Midwestern State 1
In their second ranked matchup of the weekend, the Argos again dropped doubles as they faced Midwestern State (3-2). Stephen Slocombe and Filip Vacula knocked off Rondon and Duran, the No. 2 doubles team in Division II, 6-3 at the top of the lineup, and Bruno Sanchez and Justin Van Amerongen defeated Cabrera and Ekenros one court down. Once again, Leston and Sotelo won their matchup at No. 3, this one 6-4 over Philip Kamara and Jose Marquez. And once again, the Argos came back to register another Top 25 win.

UWF rode the momentum from the latter result, as it came away with a clean sweep of the Mustangs in singles play. Alex Maulouet tied the match at the bottom of the lineup with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Van Amerongen. Rondon took down Sanchez, the No. 16 singles player in DII, 6-2, 7-5 on court two. At the top of the lineup, Cabrera won 6-4, 6-2 over Vacula to extend the lead to 4-1. Ekenros clinched the match at No. 5 with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Kamara. Sotelo made the score 5-1 on court three with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Slocombe, and Duran finished off the 6-0 portion with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-0 victory over Marquez.

No. 2 UWF 7, Cameron 0
The Argos weren't going to allow the start of this matchup to be the same song, third verse, responding with a perfect sweep of the Aggies (1-3). Leston and Sotelo finished off a 3-0 weekend with a 6-2 win on court three, and Duran and Rondon followed suit at the No. 1 position with a 6-3 result. Ekenros avenged a doubles setback with a 6-2, 6-1 singles win at No. 3. Sotelo and Rondon finished off undefeated Sundays with 6-1, 6-0 and 6-3, 6-2 wins on courts two and one, respectively, while Maulouet took No. 4 6-1, 6-2. Leston scored point six with a 6-3, 6-1 result on court five, and Mateo Martinez finished off the 7-0 win one court down in pulling out a 6-7, 6-0, 1-0 win.

The Argos head back home this week before traveling to Valdosta this weekend for an always-tough contest against the Blazers at 1 pm CT on Friday, March 7, which could decide the regular-season GSC championship and seeding in the postseason once again, before a Saturday neutral-site contest at 9 am CT against another South Region foe in Lynn.
