Shutout, Run-Rule Highlight Weekend Sweep For Argos at Union

West Florida takes game one of doubleheader 11-2, shut out Bulldogs 2-0 in game two

JACKSON. Tenn. – UWF Softball (21-8, 14-4) is leaving Jackson with a sweep after winning both games of a Saturday doubleheader with Union University (7-25, 5-14).

The Argos showcased their prolific batting lineup and had crucial contributions from almost every member of it at different points in the two wins. In the first game, West Florida run-ruled the bulldogs in six innings for a second straight game. In game two, Guffey and the Argos fielders shined again.

UWF now rides a seven-game win streak against the Bulldogs and two-straight series sweeps. They are 29-6 against Union overall.

Jessie Baughan had an impressive performance in game one of the twinbill, batting 3 for 3 on two triples, a run, and four RBI.

Erin Moon had yet another prolific outing at the plate, batting .571 in two games with two runs and four hits,

UWF got stellar pitching from its main two arms today, with Haley Guffey (13-4) and Hannah Harper (8-2) both picking up wins. Guffey picked up a conference-leading fifth shutout in the Argo's game two win, and improved her ERA to 2.06, sixth best in the GSC. Harper also allowed only two earned runs in six innings along with five strikeouts for her eighth win.

Harper started on the mound and also drove in the first run of the game for UWF with an RBI single through the left side to score Discenza. Baughan scored Harper and Emma Brice with her first of two triples in game one.

Union got a few on board with an error and a couple hits, and a fielder's choice scored one. The Bulldogs also stole home and ended the first inning down 3-2. UWF didn't score any runs in the second, but added another on Baughan's second RBI triple to score Moon.

The fourth and fifth were quiet for both teams, and the Argos forced the Bulldogs to leave four on base in the previous innings. It was all but quiet in the sixth. Nicole Mergen started things off with a score after a Nevaeh Hayes RBI single. Hayes and Bella Holliday scored on a Gianna Guerriero triple. Discenza scored Guerriero on an RBI single and was later scored by Baughan on a bases loaded RBI walk. A sacrifice flyout from Mergen brought in Moon and finished the seven-run inning.

Union managed to put a couple runners aboard in the bottom of the sixth, but the 11-2 run-rule was finalized after a line out, looking strikeout and groundout.

Game two did not go the same as the first from an offensive standpoint, but Haley Guffey again shined as the Argos battled their way to a shutout, allowing just two hits the whole game. Only one combined hit was recorded between the two teams before UWF scored in the top of the third on an error.

Guffey dealt through to the seventh inning, forcing the Bulldogs to go three up and three down in four straight frames. UWF clung to a 1-0 lead into the seventh, adding an insurance run on a Kyndal Cornelius double to score Bella Holliday who reached on an error before.

Union did manage their second hit of the game in the seventh and had the tying run at the plate but a swinging strikeout ended the game and clinched the series sweep.
