PENSACOLA, Fla. – The UWF baseball team got off to a good start in the weekend series with Gulf South Conference opponent Trevecca Nazarene on Friday, winning both games of the doubleheader.
The Argos won game one in a 3-0 decision and then got hot on offense in the second game to grab a 12-1 win in the seven-inning game.
The pitching duo of
Dalton Neuschwander and
Chase Stanhope in game one was a difference maker for UWF. The pitchers struck out 10 batters. Neuschwander got the win going six innings with six strikeouts. Stanhope gave up no hits in three innings with four strikeouts.
UWF got on the board in the third inning when
Brett Rowell hit an RBI double to left field to score
Parker Tubb. Rowell had three hits on four at bats.
Aggressive baserunning in the fourth inning earned the Argos another run.
Gann Nobles perfectly placed sacrifice bunt was able to bring
Alex Urias to third base. Urias then got a great jump on a short chopper hit by
Dom Presto to beat the throw to home plate.
West Florida added a third run in the eighth inning when
Cade Easterbrook's single brought Presto around to score.
In the second game of the day, the Argos got out to a quick lead, scoring four runs in the first inning. UWF scored runs in five of the seven innings and totaled 14 hits.
While the bats were working, the Argos continued its excellent defensive play combined with strong pitching. The team only allowed five hits in the game.
Grant Adams (4-1) got the win after going just over five innings. He gave up four hits and struck out five.
Blake Thomas and
Gabriel Moorer came in relief.
Both Rowell and
Brantley Willis had three RBIs in the game. Willis went 3-for-4 at the plate while also scoring two runs.
The Argos thrived at getting baserunners to build its lead. Out of the 14 hits in the game 12 were singles.
UWF (12-8, 8-3 GSC) will look to sweep the series on Saturday with the game starting at 11 a.m. at Jim Spooner Field.
