PENSACOLA, Fla. - After loading the bases with an
Alex Urias triple and a pair of intentional walks in the bottom of the 11th inning,
Cade Easterbrook stepped up with his second RBI of the day with a single to right to help UWF baseball (28-15, 19-9 GSC) walk off Mississippi College (26-18, 17-11 GSC) in game one of the GSC series at Jim Spooner Field on Friday night.
Both teams tallied 10 hits but UWF took advantage of 11 walks to just seven that the Argo pitching staff allowed.
After four scoreless innings, the home team got on the board in the bottom of the fifth after
Dom Presto got on with a hit-by-pitch that broke his helmet. After advancing to second on a wild pitch and third on a groundout, he came home on a second wild pitch, the second of three Choctaw pitcher Holland Townes surrendered in the inning.
Starter
Grant Adams, who went 5.2 innings with a season-high of eight strikeouts and just three hits allowed, stranded two runners in the sixth as he struck out the side for all three outs. Easterbrook got his first RBI of the day to lead off the bottom of the frame as he lifted the first pitch he saw to right for the 2-0 lead.
The Choctaws scratched one back in the eighth as JT Vance hit a single off reliever
Chase Stanhope and came home when catcher
Brett Rowell threw past third baseman
Ben Maskin on an attempted throwout at third.
With two outs gone in the top of the ninth and runners on the corners, Korey Cooper hit a single immediately out of a delay due to a lighting malfunction to score Cade Gadman and tie the game. DH
Brantley Willis then got called to the mound and worked around a walk to load the bases to induce a swinging strikeout of Logan Shurden, which ultimately sent it to extras.
UWF loaded the bases in the bottom of the tenth with two outs to go before Presto flew out to left and the outfielder threw home to get Maskin out before he tagged home for the double play. With Cooper coming home with two outs on the board in the proceeding frame, Easterbrook threw to Rowell at home after just missing the putout of the batter at first where the catcher from Shalimar, Fla., got the lead runner out to send it to the bottom of the frame and the climactic ending.
Cooper led MC with a four-of-six day and an RBI, and Vance was two-for-four with two RBI. Urias led the Argos with a three-of-five day with a walk and the winning run scored. Easterbrook was two-for-six with both UWF RBI, and Maskin was two-for-four with a walk. Willis walked three times at bat before he upped his record to 2-2 with 2.1 innings pitched, three hits and five strikeouts to bring his team's total on the night to 15 K's.
The third-place Argos can do their part to stake themselves to a top-three finish in the GSC by taking the series against the fourth-place Choctaws tomorrow. First pitch of tomorrow's doubleheader is at 1 pm. Tomorrow features an Easter Egg Hunt for fans starting at 12:45 as well as Senior Day recognitions.
