Argos Win Series Against Valdosta State, Clinch 2-Seed in GSC Tournament

Harper hits Home Run in Extras of Game Three to Help UWF to 3-2 Win

PENSACOLA, Fla. – It was a nailbiter of a series, but the Argos are leaving Valdosta with a 2-1 series win over the Blazers after splitting a pair of games Saturday and clinching the No. 2 seed in the Gulf South Conference Tournament.

UWF (33-15, 22-11) dropped game one of the Saturday doubleheader but came back late in game two to tie it up and eventually win in extra innings. The 2-1 series win clinches the No. 2 seed and the highest seeding the Argos have attained since the 2019 GSC Championship team. They will face Montevallo at 12:30 PM CST on Wednesday.

Hannah Harper hit her second home run of the series in the top of the eighth for the go ahead run to win. She is now tied for the team lead with eight home runs. The Argos are now tied for second in the GSC in home runs (36).

Gianna Guerriero also hit her first home run of the season in addition to batting 3-7 with two runs, a triple, an RBI, and a stolen base. Emma Brice was also very consistent in the doubleheader, batting 4-7 with a double and a run.

Haley Guffey (22-7) picked up yet another win in game three, helping the Argos hold the Blazers to two earned runs and contributing five K's with a 1.75 ERA in the extra innings win. She continues to lead the GSC in wins and is fifth in ERA.

Guerriero began the game with a leadoff triple but was caught stealing at home. Valdosta recorded a couple hits in the bottom of the inning, but a Harper forced the Blazers to strand two with a strikeout to close the inning. The Blazers also managed to load the bases in the second, but UWF held on get out of the jam and enter the third scoreless.

Valdosta took the lead in the third, recording three hits including an RBI single. The Argos went 1-2-3 for the second straight inning at bat, and Valdosta added a couple more runs in the fourth on two RBI singles. UWF once again went down in order in the fifth, and an error after a couple singles allowed the Blazer's fourth run.

The Argos showed life in the sixth, getting on the board with Guerriero's single and second stolen base of the series. Discenza singled to center and scored her.

UWF held the Blazers to a hit in the seventh, bit then went down for the fourth time to allow VSU to even the series at 1-1.

DH Game 2: UWF 3, VSU 2 in 8 innings

Guerriero gave the Argos a leadoff home run to begin game three. Valdosta State immediately responded with a two-run home run to right field in the bottom of the inning to take a 1-2 lead. In the second, UWF managed three hits and loaded the bases with one out but two straight flyouts cleared the inning without a score.

The teams battled back and forth until the fourth when Brice singled and advanced to third on a Bella Holliday single. Brice scored on a fielder's choice. Valdosta recorded another fielder's choice, and a fly out ended the frame leaving two on base, but UWF had tied the game.

Valdosta threatened to split the game open in the fifth when they loaded the bases, on two hits and a walk, but once again stranded all three base runners and upheld the tie. UWF followed it up by leaving two of their own on and defensively forcing a 1-2-3 for VSU.

UWF managed a runner on with a walk but again stranded them for the ninth time in the game. The winning runner reached on an Argonaut error for VSU, but a foul out sent the game to extras.
