Donor Spotlight: The Honorable Jerry Maygarden

April Donor of the Month

The Honorable Jerry Maygarden is the April Donor of the Month! Read their reasons for their generous contributions to UWF Athletics.

  • Why do you give to UWF Athletics?

My wife (Rhonda) and I revel in UWF. We met on campus for the first time in 1974, and the Commons will always be a special place for us. Athletics is an outward and visible sign of a maturing university. We are proud to be members of the Argo Athletic family.

  • Why do you continue to give annually?

We plan our philanthropy by giving a portion of our annual income to the church, the university, and various community service agencies. We build giving into our budget. Thanks to federal IRS rulings related to "Required Minimum Distributions" and "Qualified Charitable Deductions' giving is easy and painless.

  •  What would you say is the best thing about being a donor to UWF athletics?

We sincerely hope our giving will help young students realize their dreams on fields, courts, and in classrooms. That is a good "Return on Investment."

  •  What makes you passionate about UWF Athletics?

I've always been a competitor; iron sharpens iron! In the final analysis, UWF Athletics gives us an opportunity to participate vicariously in sports that we are no longer physically capable of enjoying. Rhonda and I make great spectators and fans, and we love all sports.

  • Anything else you'd like to add? For instance, a proud moment as an Argo fan or an experience you really enjoyed.
Yes, I was active in student government (50 years ago) when the decision to funnel Student Activity and Service Fees into building the Natatorium was made. That was the first time I realized big-time athletics was possible at a small university campus in the pinewoods of West Florida. I'm still proud of that decision.
