OXFORD, Ala. – UWF's bullpen continues to shine late in the season, as
Hannah Harper earns her place as the hero of day two for the Argos in the 2025 Gulf South Conference Tournament.
UWF (35-14, 22-11) took the lead in the first inning and held off the Mississippi College Choctaws for another six innings with phenomenal pitching and defense from
Haley Guffey, Harper, and the UWF fielding lineup. UWF is now 3-1 against the Choctaws this season.
Guffey (23-7) earned the win for the second straight day as Harper closed out the game and earned the save, her second of the year. Harper also led the team with two hits in the low scoring affair and contributed a couple high-effort putouts late to secure the team win.
Erin Moon gave the Argos the lead in the first and never looked back. Her two RBI double was the 44
th RBI of the season, now tied for the second most in the GSC.
This is the farthest the Argos have gotten in the GSC Tournament since winning it all in 2019. Last year the Argos made it to Friday in the loser's bracket before falling to Valdosta State.
The Argos are guaranteed to stay till at least Saturday as they take on the winner of Montevallo and Alabama Huntsville tomorrow in the semifinal at 6:00 PM CST. If they lose, they will play a second game against the Falcons/Chargers Saturday morning as per the double elimination requirements.
UWF 2, Mississippi College 1
Moon's two-RBI double put the Argos up 2-0 in the bottom of the first with no outs. Three straight outs followed, and Moon was left on at second.
The Choctaws only managed a walk in the second on offense, but adjustments on defense were critical to the rest of the game. Mississippi College made a pitching change in the second and held the Argos to a single hit through the frame. They brought the game back within a run in the third when a double to right center turned into an RBI double on an error by UWF.
Both teams left a runner on in the fourth, with the Argos hitting into a double play to close the frame. In the fifth, the Choctaws went down in order and UWF left a runner on who reached on a fielding error.
Harper came in to relieve Guffey in the sixth and battled through three hits.
Bella Holliday caught a Choctaw runner stealing at second for the first out. A popup made the second, and Harper claimed the third when she made a throw to first with her bare hand after dropping her glove.
Harper followed it up with a single in the sixth but was called out at second on a fielder's choice. UWF couldn't get anything going and forced the Choctaws to their last three outs in the top of the seventh.
A popup secured the first out, but Mississippi College followed it with a single. UWF cleared that runner on a fielder's choice. With a runner at first once again, Harper recorded the game's final groundout unassisted on a diving attempt at first that was reviewed and upheld. The win propelled the Argos into the semifinal for the first time since 2019.
