UWF Softball Earns GSC Championship Game Bid with Semifinal Win over UAH

Harper allows one hit, no runs in four innings of relief

OXFORD, Ala. – For the first time since winning it all in 2019, the UWF Argonauts (36-15, 22-11) are back in the Gulf South Conference Tournament championship game after taking down the Alabama Huntsville Chargers 8-4.

In a game that was supposed to be played on Friday and endured multiple rain delays over the course of two days, the Argos worked through the postponements and uncertainty to win their third straight game in the GSC Tournament. UWF will now take on the Auburn Montgomery Warhawks for a GSC title at 12:00 PM CST in Choccolocco Park.

The NCAA DII South Region rankings released Wednesday, with the Argos appearing at No. 7. Their three wins will all but secure them a spot in the NCAA South Region field when the NCAA DII Selection Show airs Monday at 9:00 AM CST.

Hannah Harper (13-6) came up big once again in relief of Haley Guffey, entering in the fourth inning and allowing just one hit the rest of the game on her way to a win. In her nine total innings across three games at the GSC Tournament, Harper has allowed zero earned runs, one walk, and six total hits. She was also 2-4 with a double and two RBI in the effort.

Gianna Guerriero continues to be near unstoppable at the plate, racking up another four hits on four at bats to go along with three runs and a stolen base. The GSC Co-Player of the Year is 18 for her last 26 (.692) and is currently riding a 12-game hit streak. She also boasts an 11-game run streak.

Nicole Mergen was given an opportunity to pinch hit with runners in scoring position and came up huge for the Argos, effectively putting the game out of reach with a two-RBI single. Mergen had not seen action since the West Alabama series on April 12-13 due to an injury but shined when her number was called once again.

UWF 8, UAH 4

The Argos started hot, recording four hits and three runs in the first half inning. Nevaeh Hayes scored Guerriero on an RBI single, and Harper doubled to score Hayes and Erin Moon. UAH responded with two runs of their own including an RBI single and a controversial double play that was overturned allowing a run to score at home.

In the second the fireworks stopped for both teams, and all that was managed was a Chargers single. Guerriero singled in the third but was left on. The Chargers took the lead in the bottom of the third, starting with two singles and advancing them to scoring position with a sacrifice. Two more RBI singles gave them the 3-4 lead.

Both teams went in order in the fourth as Harper subbed in for Guffey in the circle, but the Argos ruled the fifth. Holliday and Guerriero singled, and Holliday scored on a throwing error. Angelia Discenza brought in Guerriero with a sacrifice to take the lead. Harper made the Chargers go 1-2-3 for two straight innings leading to the seventh.

UWF was still up 5-4 but needed insurance to seal the win. Holliday walked, and then Guerriero singled to advance her. Discenza was walked to load the bases. Moon recorded her 45th RBI of the season on a groundout, scoring Holliday. At 6-4, the game was in a favorable spot for UWF. Mergen sealed the game for the Argos with a two-RBI single to score Guerriero and Discenza.
UAH had one final at bat, and Harper once again delivered. The Chargers managed their only hit in her four innings of work but a groundout straight to Harper's glove marked the final out of a UWF win and the Argos' ticket to the GSC Championship game.
