UWF Advances to Regional Final

Argos defeat Choctaws 4-1

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The No. 2 seed University of West Florida men's tennis team defeated the No. 7 seed Mississippi College 4-1 in the first round of the NCAA Division II South Regional on Saturday.

The Argos were up 2-0 over the Choctaws yesterday afternoon before play was suspended due to weather. UWF took the lead ahead after No. 1 doubles duo Diego Duran and Sebastian Rondon defeated Gustavo Tedesco and Florian Walcher at 6-1. Miguel Cabrera and Bernardo Costa at No. 2 took their match 6-2 over Rafael Sabio and Alex Blanchard to secure the doubles point for West Florida.

Moving into singles play, Sebastian Sotelo secured the second point for the Argos after a quick finish to his match, taking both sets at 6-1. Play was suspended shortly after all first sets were finished in the matches.

Starting off Saturday morning, No. 3 singles Duran fell to Sabio 5-7 and 0-6, giving Mississippi College their first and only point of the day. No. 2 fought back from a first set drop yesterday to take his second set 6-3 over Walcher. As he began his third set, No. 1 Cabrera finalized a 6-2 victory over Blanchard to put the Argos one point away from advancing. As Cabrera finished, No. 5 Albin Ekenros and No. 4 Alex Maulouet began their third sets, fighting for the final point needed for West Florida.

Rondon kept up his momentum, taking the final set of his match 6-0 to end it all and secure the victory for the Argos.

The Argos will face No. 3 Barry in the regional final tomorrow at 10 a.m. at Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex.
