OXFORD, Ala. – The Argos opened the 2025 Gulf South Conference Baseball Championship with a 7–5 victory over Trevecca Nazarene on Friday, powered by a 16-hit performance and a three-run surge in the seventh inning.
The seventh inning was the deciding inning for the Argos, but the comeback began in the sixth when
Brantley Willis hit a solo homerun to kick off the inning, cutting the deficit to just one run at the time with the score, 5-4.
In the seventh UWF came away with five hits and three runs scored to take a 7-5 lead that would ultimately hold for the remainder of the game.
Cade Easterbrook tied the game with an RBI single to score
Alex Urias.
Brett Rowell then followed suit with an RBI single to give the Argos the lead.
Tanner Taylor then added another RBI single to score Easterbrook to put UWF by two runs, 7-5.
Late game relief pitchers came up huge for the Argos.
Chase Stanhope, who earned the win and
Dalton Neuschwander, who earned the save combined to give up just three hits and no runs in the final three innings.
The Argos were the first team to score in the game with two runs in the second inning after
Zack Stokes drilled a two RBI single to right center field giving UWF a 2-0 lead at the time. Trevecca answered with two runs of their own in the third. Easterbrook then homered in the bottom of the inning to regain the lead. But the Trojans had the response again with a homer of their own to tie the game at 3-3 before a weather delay was issued. The game would remain in a delay for over an hour.
Easterbrook, Taylor and
Jadon Fryman all recorded three hits in the contest to lead the Argos.
With the win the Argos will play No. 2 seed Valdosta State on Saturday directly following the first game of the day which begins at 10 a.m. at Choccolocco Park.
