Resilient Argos Win Two Games Over No. 6 Florida Southern in Season Opener

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The No. 14 University of West Florida baseball team opened the 2026 season at home with a pair of wins on Friday evening against No. 6 ranked Florida Southern, including a walk off winner in the second game of the day.

The Argos won the first game 5-3 and the second game 3-2 to take the series advantage.

GAME 1
It took five innings for either of the teams to get on the scoreboard, but the Mocs notched the first two runs in the top of the fifth. The Argos didn't let the visitors hold the lead for long as senior Zack Stokes hit a two-run homer over the right field fence to tie the game 2-2 in the bottom of the fifth.

Stokes didn't stop there in providing the spark that UWF needed. In the seventh inning, with UWF down 3-2, Stokes recorded his third RBI of the game with a single that drove home Andrew Walton to again tie the score. Alex Urias then blooped a single to score what was the game-winning run. In the eighth inning the Argos added another run off a sacrifice fly by Tanner Taylor.

Micky Scheetz earned the win on the mound in his three plus innings pitched. Scheetz allowed three hits and struck out three while giving up no runs. Colton Dorsey got the start and went four innings with five strikeouts and no runs given up.

GAME 2
It was another slow offensive start in the late game of the doubleheader on Friday, but the Argos produced at the right time.

With the score tied 2-2 in the bottom of the ninth Trent Kelly led the inning off with a double to left center field to put the Argos in scoring position. Urias then put down a perfectly placed bunt that was also mishandled by Florida Southern's pitcher allowing him to advance to second and put Kelly on third. Gustavo Mendez, who had three hits in the game brought in the winning run with a hard hit ball to the fence to give the Argos a walk-off victory and series win.

UWF outhit the Mocs 9 to 5 in the game with the Argos leaving 10 on base.

Braden Rapp who came in relief and closed out the final three innings received the win. Rapp allowed just two hits and no runs. Starting pitcher Elijah Roberts was fantastic in his debut going five innings with seven strikeouts and allowing only one hit.

UWF (2-0) will host Florida Southern for the third game of the series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
