Argos clinch series win over Tars

WINTER PARK, Fla. – The No. 11 University of West Florida baseball team defeated Rollins 9-7 on Sunday afternoon to clinch the series win on the road.

The Argos started things off with one run in the bottom of the first as Gustavo Mendez drove in Trent Kelly with a single to right field. They added three more in the top of the second with a sacrifice fly from Kelly, and back-to-back doubles from Alex Urias and Zack Stokes, that extended the lead to 4-0.

Rollins followed with four runs of their own in the second, knocking two solo homers. The Tars started their third inning defensively with an error that allowed the Argos on base. A single from William Lybrook was able to score Tyler Brobst, then Urias drew a bases loaded walk to take the lead back for West Florida at 6-4. The Tars retaliated with two more in the fourth that tied the game back up at 6-6.

West Florida was able to add two runs in the sixth and another in the seventh that made it 9-6, securing the lead. Rollins tried to come back in the ninth with a solo homer, but the Argos kept their lead and ended with a 9-7 victory to clinch the series.

Tucker Jackson secured his first win of the season on the mound after going 2.1 innings with no hits or runs allowed, and Micky Scheetz got his second save.

"Today we played with a lot of passion and will to win," said head coach Mike Jeffcoat. "It became a bullpen game after having Ricks rough start, and Jackson, Lamb and Schwartz to finish. We executed when we needed to offensively and were able to take the lead for good in the seventh."

West Florida stays on the road as they head to Montevallo for their series starting Friday, February 13.
