No. 18 Softball Earns Run-Rule, Shutout in Doubleheader Wins Over Spring Hill

UWF wins 11-2 in six, 2-0 shutout over Badgers

PENSACOLA, Fla. —No. 18 West Florida (21-6, 8-4 GSC) had a successful doubleheader against Spring Hill College (17-13, 10-0 SIAC) at the UWF Softball Complex, securing an 11-2 six-inning victory in the first game followed by a 2-0 shutout in the second.
 
UWF is now 34-6 against the Badgers in the series history since 2014 and is on a 10-game win streak. 
 
Individual Highlights:
 
The Argos bullpen had an all-around dominant day in the circle, allowing just two runs total in the doubleheader. 
 
Haley Guffey (14-1) pitched a complete game, allowing only four hits and two earned runs over 6 innings, facing 23 batters with one walk and one strikeout. Her efficiency was notable, with 62 of her 92 pitches counted as strikes, resulting in a WHIP of 0.83.
 
In game 2, Hannah Harper earned a shutout through seven innings and her fifth win of the season. The lefty allowing 5 hits and no earned runs while striking out 4 batters. Harper's combined performance at the plate was also notable, as the senior from Orlando hit 4-for-6 (.667) with 3 runs, 1 home run, and 2 RBI.
 
At the plate, Nicole Mergen was the big bat yet again, crushing two home runs out of her three hits and six at bats, driving in three RBI. Both homers came in game one against the Badgers.
 
Abigail Pippen and Miranda Harmon also batted above .400 in the combined games, with Pippen hitting for two doubles including a crucial RBI double in game two. Harmon went 3-for-4 in game one with two runs and a double.
 
**#18 UWF 11, SHC 2:**
 
In Game 1, West Florida showcased an explosive offensive performance, tallying 14 hits that included three home runs. The Argonauts opened the game with a dominant first inning, highlighted by Abigail Pippen's double to right center. 
 
Nicole Mergen reached on an error, allowing Pippen to score, followed by Hannah Harper's single that brought in another run. Emma Brice's double added two more runs, and Bella Holliday capped the inning with another unearned run, ending the first inning with the Argonauts leading 5-0. 
 
The second inning saw Miranda Harmon double, and she was brought home by Angelia Discenza's single, extending the lead to 6-0. The Badgers managed to score twice in the fourth inning thanks to a homer from Meadow Villar, bringing the score to 6-2. 
 
However, West Florida responded in the fifth with back-to-back solo home runs by Mergen and Harper, increasing the lead to 8-2. The Argos sealed the game in the sixth inning as Harmon singled and later scored on a Pippen single. Mergen then hit a two-run homer, leading to a final score of 11-2.
 
**#18 UWF 2, SHC 0:**
 
In Game 2, West Florida secured a 2-0 victory, capitalizing on two fielding errors by Spring Hill and recording a shutout performance in a largely pitcher-dominated game.
 
The scoring began in the fourth inning when Hannah Harper singled up the middle. Nevaeh Hayes followed with a single and advanced to second on an error, allowing Harper to score an unearned run and putting the Argonauts ahead 1-0. 
 
In the fifth inning, Abigail Pippen doubled to right center, bringing Angelia Discenza home for the second run. UWF held off the Badgers in the sixth and seventh, including a huge double play and a strikeout from Harper to finish the game off, 2-0 UWF.
