UWF Sweeps Series Over Union

PENSACOLA, Fla. — The University of West Florida celebrated a successful doubleheader against Union University on Saturday at Jim Spooner Field, securing victories of 8-5 and 12-2.

Game 1
West Florida took control early with a dominant first inning, scoring six runs. Zack DeJesus led off by getting hit by a pitch and later scored on Trent Kelly's RBI single. William Lybrook followed with a two-RBI single, bringing home Gustavo Mendez and Kelly. Greg Pettay, Luke Hill, and Hudson Spencer continued the rally, with Pettay and Spencer each driving in a run. The inning concluded with a wild pitch allowing Pettay to score, giving West Florida a 6-0 lead. 

Union responded in the fourth inning with three runs and added two more in the seventh, narrowing West Florida's lead to 7-5. The Argos extended their lead in the eighth inning when DeJesus, who had been hit by a pitch, advanced to third on a throwing error and scored on a wild pitch, making it 8-5. West Florida secured the victory with an 8-5 final score. 

Colton Dorsey pitched 5 innings, allowing 3 earned runs on 7 hits while striking out 6 batters and issuing 1 walk over 81 pitches. Blake Thomas provided 1 inning of scoreless relief, retiring all three batters he faced with one strikeout on 10 pitches. Tucker Jackson contributed 1 inning, giving up 2 runs on 2 hits and hitting one batter. Michael Vice and Eli Lamb each pitched a scoreless inning, with Vice allowing no hits and striking out one, while Lamb efficiently closed the game with a perfect inning on just 6 pitches, securing his third save of the season.

Game 2
UWF continued to dominate Union, winning with a score of 12-2. The scoring began in the bottom of the second inning when Trent Kelly doubled and later scored on a throwing error, putting West Florida ahead 1-0. 

The third inning saw a surge from the Argos. Greg Pettay singled, followed by Zack Stokes hitting a two-run homer. A series of errors and a sacrifice fly allowed Zack DeJesus to score. Further contributions came from Jed Jones with an RBI single and Jake Cooper, who capped the inning with a three-run homer, increasing the lead to 8-0. 

In the fourth inning, West Florida continued to extend its lead. A sacrifice fly from Kelly scored Stokes, and later, Jones drove in two runs with a single. A bases-loaded walk to Jay Henderson brought in another run, making it 12-0. Union managed to score in the sixth inning with a single and an RBI fielder's choice, but the Argos' lead remained substantial at 12-2.

Elijah Roberts delivered a strong performance by pitching 6 innings, allowing just 2 earned runs on 2 hits, while striking out 6 batters and issuing 2 walks. He threw 89 pitches with 53 strikes and earned his first win of the season. Zach Nelson contributed effectively in relief, pitching a scoreless inning with no hits, striking out 1 and securing the victory for West Florida.

UWF will travel to face Auburn University Montgomery on Friday, March 27 at 5 p.m. in Montgomery, Alabama.
