West Florida Takes First Game Against AUM

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — West Florida (24-6, 13-5 GSC) secured an 8-6 victory over Auburn University at Montgomery (8-23, 4-15 GSC) on Friday at QV Lowe Field. The Argonauts' offense was bolstered by two home runs, contributing to their ten-hit performance.

West Florida began the game by scoring in the first inning when Zack Stokes doubled to right center and was driven home by Gustavo Mendez with a single up the middle. Auburn quickly responded with a solo home run, tying the score at 1–1 through one inning.

In the second inning, the Argonauts took the lead again. Greg Pettay walked and was brought home by Stokes, who homered to left center for two runs. At the end of two innings, West Florida led 3–1.

West Florida extended its lead in the fourth inning. Pettay reached on a walk and moved to third on a single by Gann Nobles. A sacrifice bunt by Zack DeJesus scored Pettay. An error allowed another run to score before Trent Kelly's single brought home Stokes, making it 6–1.

The Warhawks closed the gap in the fifth with a three-run homer by Christopher McNeill, reducing the deficit to 6–4.

In the seventh inning, AUM added another run, bringing the score to 6–5. However, West Florida sealed the victory in the ninth when William Lybrook hit a two-run homer, extending the lead to 8–5. Auburn managed one more run in the bottom of the ninth, but the Argonauts held on for an 8–6 win.

Colton Dorsey pitched 6 innings, allowing 7 hits, 5 earned runs, and 2 home runs while striking out 4 and walking 2. He threw 96 pitches, 66 of which were strikes, achieving a WHIP of 1.50. Blake Thomas contributed an inning of relief, issuing 1 walk and no hits, with all 3 outs recorded on ground balls. Micky Scheetz closed the game with 2 innings, giving up 2 hits and 1 run, while striking out 2 and walking 1, maintaining a WHIP of 1.50.

Stokes led the offensive charge with three runs and two RBIs, highlighted by a home run and a double. Lybrook contributed significantly by recording four hits, including a home run and a double, while driving in two runs. Dorsey pitched six innings, allowing five earned runs on seven hits and striking out four. Pettay showed patience at the plate, drawing two walks and scoring two runs, adding a double to his performance.

West Florida holds a record of 24-6 and is 13-5 in the GSC. Auburn has a record of 8-23 with a 4-15 mark in the GSC.
