NASHVILLE, Tenn. — No. 12 West Florida (18-3, 7-1 GSC) secured victories in both games of a doubleheader against Trevecca Nazarene University (5-7, 1-7 GSC) on Friday at the TNU Softball Complex, winning 6-3 and 7-4.
The Argonauts were in two close battles with the Trojans but pulled away in the seventh inning of both games to secure the series win. UWF scored over half of the 13 runs it managed on the day in the final innings of the two games.
Individual Highlights:
Haley Guffey delivered a complete game in game one, pitching 7 innings, allowing 3 earned runs on 7 hits, striking out 3 batters, and walking 2 while throwing 116 pitches with 73 strikes. She earned win no. 12 on the season, the best in the GSC. She also carries the 4
thbest ERA in the GSC in combined conference games, at 1.50.
Nicole Mergen had another outstanding day at the plate, driving in her 7
th home run of the season. Overall, she went 4-for-7 (.571) with a run, a double, a home run, a walk, and four RBI.
Hannah Harper earned win no. 4 of her senior season in game two in the circle, and had a solid day at the plate hitting 3-for-7 with a team-high three runs, a walk, and an RBI.
Miranda Harmon also scored three runs from the leadoff spot to jump back in front for the team lead.
**Game 1: #12 UWF 6, TNU 3:**
In the first game, West Florida began strong, as
Hannah Harper singled up the middle, leading to Mergen's homer to center field, giving the Argonauts a 2-0 lead after the first inning. The Trojans tied the game 2-2 by the end of the third inning with a two-run homer from Brianna Asmondy.
The Argonauts reclaimed the lead in the fifth inning when
Miranda Harmon scored an unearned run, making it 3-2. Trevecca tied the game again in the sixth with a double by Kyleigh Burgett, bringing the score to 3-3.
However, in the seventh inning, West Florida pulled ahead decisively. Harmon singled, advanced to third on an error, and scored on the same play, followed by
Jessie Baughan hitting a two-run homer to left center for her fifth of the year. The Argonauts ended the game with a 6-3 advantage.
**Game 2: #12 UWF 7, TNU 4**
In the second game, West Florida took an early lead with
Meg Fountain and
Hannah Harper scoring in the first inning. Fountain's single and Harper's subsequent single led to Mergen's RBI double down the left-field line, followed by
Abigail Pippen's sacrifice fly to bring in Harper, making it 2-0 after the first inning. Trevecca cut into the lead with a home run from Kyleigh Burgett in the fifth inning, making it 2-1.
West Florida added a run in the sixth when Pippen doubled, and pinch runner
Alex Whitfield scored on
Jessie Baughan's single, but the Trojans responded with two runs in the bottom of the sixth, tying the game 3-3.
In the seventh inning, West Florida regained control with a four-run surge.
Kyndal Cornelius and
Olivia Keith singled, setting up
Miranda Harmon to score. Fountain reached on a fielder's choice, bringing in Keith, while Harmon scored on a wild pitch and Fountain on Harper's groundout.
The Argonauts led 7-3 entering the bottom of the seventh, where Trevecca managed to score once more, ending the game at 7-4.
