LIVINGSTON, Ala. – For the second time in program history the University of West Florida are Gulf South Conference Men's Basketball Champions.
The Argos went on the road to take down No. 1 seed West Alabama on Sunday afternoon, 76-69 to claim the GSC title. Junior guard
Aric Demings led the team in scoring with 21 points on 7 of 12 shooting to be named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player.
Anthony Igiede scored 19 points and
Elijah Wyche added 11 points to round out the double-digit scorers for UWF.
"I'm grateful for the entire locker room," said head coach
Justin Mann. "They played together all season long. We faced some adversity throughout the season with injuries, but these guys battled. I'm so proud of this group."
West Alabama jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead but after the Argos took the lead with 14:02 remaining in the first half, the team never looked back and never gave the lead back up.
In the second half, UWF grew the lead to13 points, their largest of the game following a 3-pointer by Igiede and then a free throw by Wyche on the next possession. West Alabama didn't go away quietly as the Tigers cut the Argos lead to three points late in the half. A missed layup by UWA with one minute remaining led to a fastbreak dunk by
Tim Hall Jr. to put the Argos up eight and all but seal the game in emphatic fashion.
"Be tough," Mann said. "That's all I wrote on the board in the last four minutes after the media. I thought we were more tough today and wore them down."
Toughness defined the Argos on the road all season long even while dealing with the injury bug throughout the season. UWF was 11-2 away from Pensacola this season. "We've been road warriors all season long, neutral site games as well," Mann said. "We just keep finding ways."
In addition to Demings' Most Outstanding Player award, Wyche and Igiede were also named to the GSC All-Tournament Team.
West Florida (25-8, 15-7 GSC) will now wait for their seeding in the NCAA Division II Championships. The Argos earned the automatic bid with the conference tournament title, but the team will await their matchup which will be announced tonight during the NCAA selection show at 10 p.m. CT.
