CLINTON, Miss. — West Florida (31-12, 17-11 GSC) fell to Mississippi College (25-19, 18-10 GSC), 5-4 at Frierson Field on Friday. Despite a late two-run rally in the ninth inning to tie the game MC was able to generate a run in the bottom of the ninth.
UWF opened the scoring in the first inning when
Zack Stokes walked and later scored on a double to left center by
William Lybrook, giving the team a 1-0 lead after one inning. Mississippi College tied the game in the bottom of the second inning with a solo home run by Alex Johnson. The score was 1-1 after two innings.
The Choctaws took the lead in the fifth inning as Ty Murphy scored on an RBI single to right field by Tyler Sanderson, making it 2-1 in favor of MC. The home team extended its lead in the sixth inning with two unearned runs on a single by Ty Murphy. Mississippi College led 4-1 through six innings.
The Argos responded in the seventh inning. Stokes scored on a groundout by Lybrook, trimming the deficit to 4-2 after seven innings. In the ninth inning,
Greg Pettay and Stokes walked, followed by a sacrifice bunt by
Alex Urias to advance both runners. Pettay scored on a groundout by
Trent Kelly, and Stokes crossed the plate on a passed ball, tying the game at 4-4. However, Mississippi College regained the lead in the bottom of the ninth with a single up the middle by Cade Gadman, scoring a pinch runner to secure the win.
Colton Dorsey delivered a solid performance for West Florida, pitching 6 innings with 8 strikeouts while allowing 2 earned runs and 6 hits.
Blake Thomas pitched a scoreless seventh inning, recording 1 strikeout and 1 walk.
Eli Lamb followed with a hitless eighth inning, issuing 1 walk.
Micky Scheetz pitched the final inning, giving up 1 earned run on 2 hits in just 1/3 inning, ultimately taking the loss.
Stokes led the team by scoring three runs while also drawing three walks. Lybrook contributed offensively with a double and two RBIs.
Tanner Taylor posted a solid performance at the plate with two hits. On the mound, Dorsey struck out eight batters over six innings, allowing two earned runs.
UWF has a record of 31-12 and is 17-11 in the GSC.
