CLINTON, Miss. — No. 14 West Florida (35-9, 20-7) secured a series sweep and two victories over Mississippi College (25-19-1, 15-12) in their Saturday doubleheader.
in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, UWF turned in a 13-hit effort that included four doubles and two home runs for the win. In game two,
Haley Guffey shut down the Choctaws bats and the Argos enjoyed a 3-run first inning to coast to the second win of the day.
UWF has now won the last two series against the Choctaws and improved to 22-12 in the series history. The Argos currently ride a six-game win streak against the Choctaws.
The Argos move up to second in the GSC as AUM holds the head-to-head tiebreaker with both team's records being 20-7 in conference play.
Individual Highlights:
Nicole Mergen had a phenomenal performance in the twinbill against the Choctaws, batting 3-for-7 with three runs, three home runs, and five RBI. She had two home runs in the first game, and one in the second. Her 15 home runs ties her with Madeyln Vasquez for fourth most in a season in program history.
Harper pitched a complete game performance, going 7 innings and allowing 3 earned runs on 11 hits, recording 1 strikeout and issuing no walks. She threw 78 pitches, with 55 being strikes, improving her record to 10-4. Harper also went 3-for-7 at the plate with two more doubles and two runs with three RBI.
Haley Guffey delivered a standout performance for West Florida, pitching a complete game with 7 innings of work, allowing just two hits and one earned run, with no walks and only one strikeout. Guffey's efficient use of 76 pitches, 48 of which were strikes, secured her 23rd win of the season.
Miranda Harmon scored two runs and added two hits in game two.
Nevaeh Hayes also posted an efficient day, tallying three hits, including two doubles, and drove in one run.
Game 1: No. 14 UWF 7, MC 3
In the second game, West Florida took control with a four-run third inning and sealed the win with two additional runs in the seventh.
Harmon began the game with a single, advancing to second on Discenza's single. Harper contributed with a double, bringing Harmon home for the first run. After one inning, the score was tied at 1–1.
In the third inning, the Argonauts capitalized on an error by Mississippi College, allowing Harmon and Discenza to score.
Nicole Mergen followed up with a two-run homer, adding to the lead and ending the inning with West Florida leading 5–1.
In the seventh inning, Mergen hit her second home run of the game, and
Nevaeh Hayes doubled in another run, extending West Florida's lead. Despite Mississippi College scoring twice in their half, the Argonauts secured a 7–3 victory.
Game 2: No. 14 UWF 4, MC 1
West Florida's defense limited Mississippi College to just two hits, while its offense recorded six hits, including a home run. The game started strong for the Argonauts, as
Miranda Harmon singled, followed by
Angelia Discenza with another single.
Hannah Harper added to the hit parade, loading the bases.
Nicole Mergen then flied out, allowing Harmon to score.
Abigail Pippen's single brought in both Discenza and Harper, ending the inning with West Florida leading 3-0.
In the fourth inning, Mergen extended the lead with a solo home run. Mississippi College responded with a solo homer by Blakely Gill, but West Florida maintained a 4-1 lead by the end of the inning.
The score remained unchanged through the final innings, concluding with the Argonauts emerging victorious with a final score of 4-1.
