PENSACOLA, Fla. — The 2-seed University of West Florida men's tennis team secured a commanding 4-1 victory over 7-seed West Alabama fon Monday at the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex in postseason action during the first round of the NCAA South Region Tournament. The Argonauts clinched the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions and added three singles victories to clinch the match.
West Florida secured the doubles point with victories at No. 2 and No. 1 doubles.
Mark Neyelov and
Goncalo Quintela clinched the first win with a 6-1 victory over Sebastiao Vilas and Itaru Kikuchi. Following up,
Diego Duran and
Sebastian Rondon defeated Jacob Tapia and Federico Iturbe 6-3 at No. 1 doubles. West Alabama managed a win at No. 3 doubles, as Alfonso Portugal and Maksim Goncharov overcame
Vicente Couto and
Rafael Sabio, 6-3.
In singles,
Sebastian Rondon extended West Florida's lead with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Jacob Tapia at No. 1 singles. Quintela then added another point at No. 5 singles, prevailing 6-3, 6-4 against Sebastiao Vilas. West Alabama responded at No. 6 singles, where Itaru Kikuchi defeated Neyelov 7-5, 6-4. However, Duran clinched the dual match for West Florida at No. 2 singles with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 victory over Alfonso Portugal.
