PENSACOLA, Fla. — The University of West Florida took the NCAA DII South Region 1 Championship over Lee University in a 2-0 victory at Jim Spooner Field on Sunday.
Both teams played strong defensively, holding it scoreless through six innings.
Greg Pettay opened things in the seventh inning with a single and advanced to second after
Alex Urias walked. A pinch-hit sacrifice bunt by
Jake Cooper moved both runners into scoring position. Pettay then scored on a passed ball, and Urias came home on
Ethan Babcock's RBI fielder's choice. This two-run inning gave West Florida a 2-0 lead.
In the ninth,
Micky Scheetz took the mound and secured the win by allowing just one hit and striking out one batter.
Garrett Brewer started for West Florida and pitched 4 innings without allowing a run, giving up 4 hits and 2 walks while striking out 2 batters.
Blake Thomas followed with 1 inning of relief, allowing 1 hit and throwing 8 of his 11 pitches for strikes.
Braden Rapp contributed 3 innings, surrendering 2 hits and striking out 1 while earning his ninth win of the season. Scheetz closed the game, recording a save with 1 inning pitched, allowing 1 hit, and striking out 1 on 9 pitches. This tabs Scheetz 16th save on the year.
West Florida will host the NCAA DII South Super Regional against No. 2 Tampa starting Thursday, May 21 at Jim Spooner Field.
