PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Florida men's basketball team fell to Chowan University 70-59 in the final game of the UWF Thanksgiving Classic Saturday night. The Argonauts were led by sophomore Deangelo Legrier (Orlando, Fla./Edgewater HS) who recorded his second career double-double and first of the 2014-15 season after he scored 15 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.
"We didn't play that great during the first half and it showed on the scoreboard," said head coach Bob Stinnett. "Bu I am extremely happy about the way we came out and worked in the second half, but we just couldn't overcome the first half."
The Argos were outscored 40-23 in the first half and were held to just 31 percent (9-29) shooting from the field while Hawks shot 45 percent (15-33) and also made eight baskets from 3-point range. UWF was led by senior Terrence Townes (Danville, Va./Gulf Coast State) who scored eight points in the period while also grabbing three rebounds.
West Florida came out with a different mindset in the second half and looked to close the halftime deficit that the Hawks built up. UWF outscored their opponent 36-30 in the half but just couldn't overcome the Chowan's 17 point lead at the half and eventually fell 70-59.
After Legrier, West Florida's next leading scorer was Lendward Griffin (Jacksonville, Fla./Ribault HS) and Tyler Funk (Clarence, N.Y./Hillsborough CC) who each added 10 points while Griffin was one rebound shy of recording a double-double.
"Unfortunately we didn't play hard in the first half and didn't bring enough energy to start the game," said Deangelo Legrier. "I'm proud of my teammates because we came out and fought hard in the second half."
The Argos will open Gulf South Conference play next weekend when they travel to face Alabama Huntsville and North Alabama Dec. 4 and 6, respectively.
