Argos fall to Valdosta State 66-67 in final seconds at home

PENSACOLA, Fla.  – The University of West Florida men's basketball team lost to Valdosta State University 66-67 at home Saturday afternoon. Senior Erin Straughn (Pensacola, Fla./East Carolina University) led UWF after recording his second double-double of the season with 19 points and 10 rebounds.

"We started out really well in the first half and held a lead going into the break," said head coach Bob Stinnett. "In the second half we lost momentum but we hung in there until the final few seconds."

West Florida held a seven point lead at halftime but VSU went on a 10-5 scoring run midway through the second half and cut the Argos lead to one with 8:31 remaining. The Blazers would continue their run and held a seven point lead with 1:34 left in the game.

The Argos would close the gap on VSU after points from Justin Williams (Tallahassee, Fla./Leon HS) and Lendward Griffin (Jacksonville, Fla./Ribault HS) and with :08 seconds left on the clock, Terrence Townes (Danville, Va./Gulf Coast State) tied the game with a pair of free throws.

Valdosta State would take the close victory however, after a late free throw by Josh Lemons sealed the game for the Blazers.

Senior Demetrius Moore (Paxton, Fla./Indiana State University) was the next leading scorer for UWF after he scored nine points and added five rebounds.

West Florida will host North Alabama and Alabama-Huntsville next weekend to continue Gulf South Conference play.
