No. 18 UWF volleyball drops two matches at South Region Crossover

West Florida falls to No. 14 Florida Southern 1-3 before being swept by No. 17 Palm Beach Atlantic 0-3 on Friday

CARROLLTON, Ga. – The No. 18-ranked University of West Florida volleyball team's 13-game winning streak came of an end on Friday with a pair of losses at the 2015 South Region Crossover. West Florida (17-4, 10-0 GSC) fell to No. 14 Florida Southern 1-3 (18-25, 25-22, 25-27, 17-25) in the first match of the day before getting swept by No. 17 Palm Beach Atlantic 0-3 (20-25, 24-26, 20-25) in the nightcap.
 
"We had our hands full today," head coach Melissa Wolter said. "We knew that we would going into this tournament. It's unfortunate, we had critical mistakes, inability to put balls away. We just got out-ball controlled, out-attacked, and it's just part of the deal. We earned that number one seed and that's the draw we got and it's unfortunate that we couldn't respond today better than we did."
 
West Florida will wrap up competition at the 2015 South Region Crossover on Saturday, October 17 with a match against Sunshine State Conference opponent Barry at 12:15 p.m. ET.
 
"Tomorrow is critical for our team," Wolter said. "It's critical for our postseason hopes, critical for our first regional ranking. It is imperative that we win that match tomorrow. Our team hadn't lost since the second week of the season, and we have to figure out how to respond."
 
No. 14 Florida Southern 3, No. 18 West Florida 1
 
No. 18 West Florida tallied a season-high 37 attack errors in the 1-3 loss to No. 14 Florida Southern in the first match of the day as the Argonauts saw its 13-match winning streak come to an end on Friday.
 
UWF got out to a rough start offensively as the Argos tallied 13 attack errors to open the match with an 18-25 loss in the first set. West Florida turned things around in the second set behind 14 kills at a .205 clip as sophomore Rachel Neblett (Austin, Texas/Vista Ridge HS) tallied four kills on five attempts at a .800 clip to pace the Argos.
 
West Florida led 21-14 late in the third set before Florida Southern rallied with a 9-2 run to tie the match at 23 points apiece. UWF had set point with the 25-24 lead but FSC would rally with a 3-0 run to take the third set by a score of 27-25.
 
The Moccasins carried its momentum from the third set and got out to a 6-0 early lead in the fourth set. FSC would go on to clinch the match in the fourth set by a score of 25-17.
 
Neblett tallied 10 kills at a .280 clip with three blocks while junior Cora Bidlack (Randolph, N.J./Randolph HS) also had 10 kills with a pair of blocks in the loss.
 
Sophomore Monique StCyr (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown HS) had 36 assists, 19 digs, one block and a service aces while senior Autumn Duyn (Venice, Fla./Venice HS) had a team-high 23 digs.
 
No. 17 Palm Beach Atlantic 3, No. 18 West Florida 0
 
The No. 17-ranked Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish tallied 11 blocks and had 46 kills with a .306 team attacking percentage in the win over West Florida on Friday night. UWF's team attacking percentage improved in the second game of the day to .207 but the Argos couldn't pull out the win in the nightcap.
 
Junior Corisha Smith tallied 10 kills at an impressive .471 clip while Bidlack also added 10 kills and a block in the loss.
 
Junior Tori Martella (Jacksonville, Fla./Providence HS) led the team with 18 digs while StCyr had 34 assists.
