CARROLLTON, Ga. – The No. 18-ranked University of West Florida volleyball team defeated Sunshine State Conference opponent Barry 3-1 (25-12, 25-17, 24-26, 25-18) at the South Region Crossover on Saturday. West Florida (18-4, 10-0 GSC) tallied 10 team blocks and seven service aces in the win and had a team attacking percentage of .287.
"This was a really important win for us," head coach
Melissa Wolter said. "Barry is a very good team so we knew we would have to execute our game plan well. I'm proud of our kids for keeping their composure after losing that tight third set. We had great performances out of Corisha, Kat and Autumn and I think that was really the difference."
West Florida had a balanced attack in the first set as five Argonauts tallied at least two kills. UWF had a .355 team attacking percentage in the first set with 12 kills with only one attack error. Junior
Kathryn Torre (Highland, Ill./State College of Florida) had three kills on three swings to pace UWF in the opening set to a 25-12 win.
Sophomore
Monique StCyr (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown HS) tallied four kills (.667) and 11 assists in the second set to go along with a pair of digs and one block. UWF had 17 kills as a team in the second set at a .286 clip as junior
Corisha Smith (Inwood, W.Va./Musselman HS) had five kills on ten swings with only one attack error. UWF would take the second set by a score of 25-17.
Barry responded in the third set behind a .297 team attacking percentage. The third set saw the score tied 16 times and included nine lead changes. West Florida had match point with the 24-23 lead late in the third set before BU closed out the set on a 3-0 run.
The Argonauts had an impressive offensive showing in the fourth and final set tallying 17 kills with only three attack errors at a .326 clip. Smith tallied six kills at a .556 in the final set to lead UWF to a 25-18 win.
Smith ended the match with 14 kills at a .400 clip while senior
Autumn Duyn (Venice, Fla./Venice HS) tallied 13 kills at a .262 clip and a team-high 20 digs. Duyn also tallied three service aces and three blocks in the win.
Torre tallied 10 kills on 17 attempts with no errors at an impressive .588 clip and added three blocks in the win. StCyr tallied 44 assists, three service aces, 10 digs and two blocks.
West Florida will get back to Gulf South Conference competition on Sunday, October 18 with a match against West Georgia at 2 p.m. ET. UWF will then face Valdosta State on the road on Tuesday, October 20 at 6 p.m. ET before returning home.
