October 21, 2015 MATCH NOTESLIVE STATS/VIDEO PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Florida women's soccer team will play host to Gulf South Conference opponents Delta State and Mississippi College on October 23 and 25, respectively. The Friday match against Delta State is slated to begin at 7:30 p.m. and is a part of UWF's Homecoming weekend, and Sunday's match against MC is set for a 3 p.m. start.
The Argonauts currently sit in fifth place in the GSC standings, just one point behind West Georgia.
Individual Gulf South Conference Rankings UWF forwards
Kaley Ward (Saint Cloud, Fla./Tampa),
Daryl Bell (Sarasota, Fla./Southeast HS) and
Amber Pennybaker (Indianapolis, Ind./Tampa) have each scored seven or more goals on the season, making West Florida the only GSC team with three players to accomplish that feat. Ward leads the team with eight, putting her in a tie for third place among players in the conference, while Bell and Pennybaker have each scored seven and are in a tie for eighth.
Freshman Production The UWF women's soccer team has seen great production from this year's crop of freshmen. Keeper
Ana Chumik (Riga, Latvia/Riga Kengarags HS) has posted the lowest goals against average (GAA) in the conference this year (0.91), among qualified players. Chumik has allowed just eight goals on the year and has played a part in three shutouts for the Argos on the way to recording a 5-2 record.
Sofie Broch-Lips (Aarhus, Denmark/Marselisborg Gymnasium) and
Elizabeth Vickers (Panama City, Fla./Mosley HS) have started all 13 games for UWF as freshmen. Broch-Lips has scored twice for the Argos, including a game-winning goal against Shorter on October 4. Vickers, a defender, has played every possible minute for UWF and has helped anchor a defense that has allowed fewer goals per game than any other team in the GSC.
UWF to host D2 National Championship For the third time in 10 years, UWF will host the NCAA Division II Soccer Championships at Brosnaham Park in Pensacola. The event will begin with semifinals for the men's and women's brackets on December 3, and national championship matches will be played on December 5.
Scouting Delta State and Mississippi College Delta State has allowed more goals per game than any other team in the conference and has posted the lowest average margin of victory heading into the weekend. The Lady Statesmen have gotten most of their offense from Tais Cotta and Taylor Guess, who have each scored three goals on the year. The Lady Statesmen have struggled defensively, allowing 2.6 goals per game with a .670 save percentage on the season.
Mississippi College, however, brings one of the strongest defenses and goalkeepers in the conference to Sunday's match. Keeper Andrea McDonald has posted a 0.61 GAA, a .795 save percentage and eight shutouts on the year, all of which would rank in the top three among GSC goalkeepers. The Choctaws also have two top scorers in Jess Davenport and Caitlin Hayes, who have each scored seven times this year. Senior defender Meghan Dodge has seven assists this season, which would top the GSC.
Because Mississippi College is a provisional member of the Gulf South Conference, Sunday's game counts in Gulf South Conference standings, but the Choctaws are not eligible for the GSC Tournament or player awards.
The men's and women's matches on Friday will follow a Homecoming tailgate for athletics and alumni.
