No. 23 UWF volleyball sweeps Shorter at home on Friday night

Argonauts improve to 13-1 in the Gulf South Conference with win over the Hawks

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The No. 23-ranked University of West Florida volleyball team swept Shorter 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-17) at home on Friday night. West Florida (21-5, 13-1 GSC) sweeps its 17th opponent of the season and improves to 10-1 in matches at the UWF Field House this season.

"It felt great to play a match back at home, our players were talking about it all week," head coach Melissa Wolter said. "It was great to get out on our home court tonight in front of our fans. We had a great week of practice kind of fine-tuning some skills and I think the performance showed that."

Junior Cora Bidlack (Randolph, N.J./Randolph HS) had an efficient offensive performance with 10 kills at a .450 clip with only one attack error on 20 attempts.

"Cora is one of those players that when she is on I'd put her up against any team in the country," Wolter said. "She's a phenomenal athlete and a great volleyball player. Tonight she was taking really good swings and was extremely effective."

Fellow junior Kathryn Torre (Highland, Ill./State College of Florida) had eight kills (.316) and four blocks in the win while senior Autumn Duyn (Venice, Fla./Venice HS) had seven kills and 18 digs.

West Florida tallied a .268 team attacking percentage in the win and had six blocks on the night.

Junior Corisha Smith (Inwood, W.Va./Musselman HS) entered the match in the third set and played a key role in closing out the win for the Argonauts. Smith tallied seven kills on 12 swings with no errors with an impressive .583 attacking percentage in the final set to lead West Florida to victory.

"Corisha came off the bench tonight and posted numbers that most players won't put up in a three-set match," Wolter said. "I'm really pleased with the depth that we have on the pins. Just the overall performance was really strong from start to finish."

Sophomore Monique StCyr (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown HS) led the team with 37 assists, two blocks and a service aces while junior Tori Martella (Jacksonville, Fla./Providence HS) had a team-high 19 digs.

Duyn, Martella and senior Colleen Starrs (West Bloomfield, Mich./Walled Lake Central HS) were honored before the match for reaching the 1,000 digs career milestone. Martella and Starrs both tallied their 1,000th dig during the 2015 season. Duyn (1,433), Starrs (1,123) and Martella (1,088) rank second, fourth and fifth, respectively, in career digs at UWF.

West Florida will host to the ninth annual 'Pack it Pink' breast cancer awareness match against Lee University on Saturday, October 31 at 4 p.m. Cancer survivors are encouraged to attend a reception in the Argonaut Athletic Club at 3 p.m. prior to the match.

The UWF volleyball team and staff encourage all cancer survivors to attend the volleyball match and to be honored for their courage before the match. Donations will be accepted in lieu of tickets for the match. The first 200 fans to arrive also receive a 'Pack it Pink' T-shirt.
