November 14, 2015 MATCH NOTESLIVE STATS/VIDEO MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The University of West Florida women's soccer team will face South Region host Barry on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Argonauts are coming off a 1-0 first-round win over Nova Southeastern on Friday, when the Argonauts outshot the Sharks 14-6 overall and 10-1 in the second half.
Scouting BarryBarry has posted the second-best goal-scoring offense (2.13 goals per game) and goals against average (0.81) in the Sunshine State Conference during the 2015 campaign, and the Buccaneers also own the top average margin of victory in the SSC.
Like West Florida, Barry has a variety of options on the offensive side of the pitch. Four Buccaneers, Shanice Robe, Lavinia Nkomo and Amanda Traynor, rank in the top 10 in the SSC in total points. Robe and Nkomo rank sixth and seventh, respectively, in total goals, while Nkomo and Traynor are tied for the conference lead in assists.
The Bucs defense has been strong all year, as the team has given up more than one goal in just two games all year, in a 2-0 loss against Embry-Riddle and a 5-4 loss against Lynn. Goalkeeper Paula Forero has allowed just 13 goals in 16 games, posting a 0.79 GAA and recording eight shutouts for the Bucs this season.
Series History Against BarryWest Florida's history against Barry University has been marked by lengthy streaks for each program. UWF is 7-9-2 in the series, with Barry picking up wins in the first six matches of the series, beginning in 1994. West Florida is 6-0 against the Buccaneers since 2006, however, and has outscored BU 26-4 in that time. UWF last played Barry in 2011, in a season-opening match that resulted in a 3-2 win for the Argonauts.
NCAA Tournament HistoryWest Florida is appearing in the NCAA Tournament for the 13th time in program history, and the Argos are one of just five teams in Division II to reach the championship match three times (Franklin Pierce, Grand Valley State, Barry, UC San Diego). The Argos have appeared in two of the last three NCAA Tournament Championship matches, winning the national title in 2012 and placing as national runners-up in 2013.
UWF's first appearance in the tournament came in 1999, when current UWF men's soccer head coach
Bill Elliott was at the helm for both West Florida soccer programs. West Florida appeared once more in Elliott's tenure, in 2001. Since current women's soccer head coach
Joe Bartlinski took the reins of the program, UWF has 12 NCAA Tournament appearances in 14 seasons.
Most recently, West Florida appeared in the 2013 NCAA Championship Finals Match, which resulted in a 2-0 loss to Grand Valley State and gave UWF its second national runner-up. UWF won the NCAA Championship the year before that with a 1-0 win over UC San Diego in the final match. Since 2005, UWF in 18-7 in the NCAA Tournament.
UWF Players to WatchWest Florida has been led by a trio of top scorers this season.
Daryl Bell ranks second in the GSC with 15 goals and 36 points.
Kaley Ward ranks fourth in the conference with 24 points, and
Amber Pennybaker ranks sixth with 22 points. Bell, Ward and Pennybaker each rank in the GSC's top 10 in goals, assists and points, and UWF is the only team in the conference with three players in any of those categories.
The Argos have gotten production from the midfield as well, as
Sara Helgadottir stands tied for the team lead with six assists, which places her in a tie for the fifth-most assists in the conference. West Florida has seen 10 players contribute five or more points this season, including first team All-GSC defenders
Emily Vogler and
Svenja Burkhardt.
Goalkeeping has been a point of strength for the Argonauts as well, as
Emily Grammer and
Ana Chumik have combined to allow a 0.70 GAA on the season, which ranks best in the GSC.
