PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Florida softball team lost both games of its doubleheader against the University of North Alabama Saturday afternoon. The Argonauts (1-6, 0-2) fell in game one to the Lions 7-0 and then 5-1 in game two.
"We just came out tight today and couldn't find a way to play relaxed," said head coach
Melissa Paul. "As long as we come out tomorrow relaxed, we'll be in good shape."
Game 1 – West Florida 0, North Alabama 7 West Florida struggled at the plate during the first game and had their first hit in the game in the fourth inning after junior
Emily Pettigrew (Navarre, Fla./Pensacola State College) singled for the Argos. UWF totaled three hits in the game and had three walks. North Alabama started the scoring early for the Lions after scoring a run in the first and then followed with runs in the third and fourth to jump to an early 3-0 lead.
UNA would close out the game with two runs in the sixth and seventh to seal the 7-0 victory over the Argos.
Bianca Lopez (Stuttgart, Germany/Patch American HS),
Alex Marionakis (Royal Palm Beach, Fla./Royal Palm Beach HS), and Pettigrew each had hit in the game.
Kalyn Chapman (Boonville, Ind./Wabash Valley JC) was credited with the loss after going one inning and gave up one run.
Game 2 – West Florida 1, North Alabama 5 It was another slow start for the Argos in the second game of the doubleheader, but this time the Lions took a while to get things rolling as well. Neither team produced a run until the fourth inning after UNA scored in the top half and junior
Kayla Rosario (Pensacola, Fla./Pensacola State College) batted in
Chelsy Krantz (Fort Dodge, Iowa/Iowa Central CC) to keep things tied at one.
However, a three run fifth inning by the Lions would give UNA the momentum and North Alabama would score an insurance run in the seventh to take the 5-1 victory. Two Argos had multiple hits in the game including Rosario who went 2-for-3 as well as
Lou Barnard (Apopka, Fla./Lake Sumter State College) who also went 2-for-3.
Freshman
Sarah Maloney (Tamarac, Fla./Cypress Bay HS) was credited with the loss after going 4.1 innings, gave up six hits, four runs, and struck out two batters.
The Argos will wrap up their three game series against North Alabama tomorrow with a single game slated to start at 1 p.m. CT.
